Searched your own name and found a TruthFinder report with your address, your age and your relatives on it? The TruthFinder opt out is free and runs through TruthFinder’s own opt out page, where you submit your details exactly as your report shows them and TruthFinder says removal may take up to 48 hours. You can do it yourself in a few minutes, or Removal Lab can handle the TruthFinder opt out for you.
One thing surprises people. TruthFinder is one of several PeopleConnect brands, alongside Intelius, US Search and Instant Checkmate. It is registered as its own company with its own route, so a TruthFinder opt out does not clear the others. This guide covers what is different about TruthFinder.
The quick version: TruthFinder opt out
- Search TruthFinder for your name and note how your report shows your name, address and date of birth.
- Open the TruthFinder opt out page. Its California registration says the Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data links on the homepage lead to the same request.
- Submit your details as they appear on the report, with an email address you check. Send one request per report.
- Wait. TruthFinder says removal may take up to 48 hours. Then search your name again.
- Repeat on Intelius, US Search and Instant Checkmate, then clear the old Google result. Or send the links to Removal Lab for a free check.
TruthFinder opt out at a glance
These are the facts that matter before you start, each taken from TruthFinder’s own opt out page, the FTC or what the company told the California data broker registry.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does it cost anything? | No. The FTC says you can opt out of people search sites yourself for free. The TruthFinder opt out page we read asks for no payment. |
| Where do I start? | TruthFinder’s opt out page, headed Remove Your Info. Its registration says the Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data links on the homepage reach it too. |
| What do I give? | Your name as it appears on the site, your address, your date of birth, any other detail that identifies you and a valid email address. |
| How long does it take? | TruthFinder says records are removed shortly after you submit and that it may take up to 48 hours. |
| Several reports? | One request for each report. TruthFinder says removing you and your spouse takes two requests. |
| Other ways in | Email help@truthfinder.com or call 855 921 3711, the details on its latest registry entry we could read. TruthFinder also says it accepts requests by post. |
| Who runs it? | TruthFinder, LLC in San Diego, California. PeopleConnect lists TruthFinder as one of its brands. |
| Covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act? | TruthFinder told the California registry that neither it nor its subsidiaries is regulated by the FCRA. |
How to opt out of TruthFinder step by step
Step 1. See how your report shows you
TruthFinder asks you to submit your information as it appears on your report. So start by searching TruthFinder for your own name. Write down the spelling of your name, the address it lists and your date of birth as shown. TruthFinder points out that several people may share your exact name, so note any detail that sets you apart, such as a middle initial or a past city.
Step 2. Open the TruthFinder opt out page
The TruthFinder opt out page loaded for our check. It is headed Remove Your Info, followed by a TruthFinder opt out FAQ. Our reader saw the text but not the form, so we cannot list field labels or button names. Follow each screen as it appears.
TruthFinder’s older registration with California gave a second opt out address and said the Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data links on the TruthFinder homepage lead there too. If you end up on a page titled PeopleConnect Suppression Center, you are still on an official page. PeopleConnect links its own Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information to that centre.
Step 3. Give an email address you actually read
TruthFinder says it uses your email address to contact you if it has questions about your request. Use an inbox you check and look in your spam folder for a day or two after your TruthFinder opt out.
Step 4. Send one request per report
TruthFinder is plain about this: if you have more than one report, submit a separate request for each. The same goes for family members. A couple who both want out need two TruthFinder opt out requests, one each.
Step 5. Check again after 48 hours
TruthFinder says your records are removed shortly after the opt out request is submitted and that this may take up to 48 hours. Then search your name again with the same details and screenshot the result.
Step 6. Use email, phone or post if the form fails
TruthFinder’s latest registry entry we could read lists help@truthfinder.com and 855 921 3711. Its older registration also gave (800) 699 8081 during business hours. TruthFinder says it accepts requests by post. The opt out page we read did not show a postal address, but the address TruthFinder gave the California registry is 2534 State Street, Suite 473, San Diego, CA 92101. Whichever route you use, include your name, address and date of birth as the report shows them.
What TruthFinder shows and where its data comes from
PeopleConnect describes TruthFinder as its brand with broad reach. The TruthFinder pages that list what a report contains did not load for our check, so this table sticks to the official sources we opened. It shows what a TruthFinder opt out can and cannot reach.
| What we checked | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Where the data comes from | TruthFinder says it builds reports from local, state, federal and independent sources. |
| The public records behind a report | Still available after you opt out. TruthFinder says people may be able to view records by asking the government directly or through other websites. |
| Your name in other people’s reports | TruthFinder says you may still appear as a possible relative or associate. |
| Sex offender location data | TruthFinder says the opt out does not remove it. |
| Old Classmates profiles | Classmates, another PeopleConnect brand, says people search results and reports may include information that is publicly available on the Classmates Service. |
| Data about minors, precise location or reproductive health | TruthFinder told the California registry it collects none of these. |
The Classmates point is worth a moment. Its privacy policy says it may share your information between the PeopleConnect brands and within the family of companies. If you once filled in a Classmates profile, Classmates says you can opt out of that by removing your account.
Is TruthFinder the same as Intelius and Instant Checkmate?
Same family, separate opt outs. PeopleConnect lists Intelius, TruthFinder, US Search, Instant Checkmate and Classmates as its brands. Its privacy policy says these sister sites manage their own privacy policies. In the California registry, TruthFinder, LLC and Instant Checkmate, LLC each filed their own entry with their own email and phone. Intelius, LLC filed one entry that covers Intelius, US Search and US Search Pro.
| Site | Company in official records | Opt out route in official records | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intelius | Intelius, LLC | Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data link at the foot of your profile | Intelius opt out |
| US Search | Intelius, LLC, trading as US Search and US Search Pro | The same Intelius route, which names ussearch.com and pro.ussearch.com | US Search opt out |
| TruthFinder | TruthFinder, LLC | Its own opt out page or the same two homepage links | This guide |
| Instant Checkmate | Instant Checkmate, LLC | Its own opt out page or the same two homepage links | Instant Checkmate opt out |
| ZabaSearch | Not confirmed | Check who runs the page you see | ZabaSearch opt out |
So US Search shares the Intelius route, while TruthFinder has its own. No official page we opened says a TruthFinder opt out also clears Intelius or Instant Checkmate, or that it does not. The safe course is a separate request on each site where you find yourself. Our Intelius opt out guide covers the shared Intelius and US Search route.
Is a TruthFinder report a background check you can be judged on?
TruthFinder told the California registry that neither it nor its subsidiaries is regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. TruthFinder’s own terms did not load for our check, so we cannot quote its wording on how reports may be used.
The FCRA is the law that covers real screening reports. The FTC’s summary says a consumer reporting agency may share your file only with people who have a valid need, that an employer needs your written consent and that you must be told if information in your file has been used against you. You also have the right to dispute incomplete or inaccurate information with that agency, which must then investigate unless the dispute is frivolous.
In practice: if a landlord or employer turned you down, use your FCRA rights with the screening company named in the notice. Use the TruthFinder opt out for the people search report itself.
What the TruthFinder opt out does and does not remove
- Your own report on TruthFinder. TruthFinder says it stops your personal report from appearing.
- Your access to TruthFinder. Not affected. TruthFinder says you can still create an account and search after you opt out.
- Mentions in other reports. Your name may still show as a relative or associate on someone else’s report.
- Sex offender location data. TruthFinder says this is not removed.
- Public records. The records stay with the government and on other websites. The FTC says the same about every people search site.
- Sister sites and Google. Not covered by anything we could find. Treat Intelius, US Search, Instant Checkmate and Google as separate jobs.
Your rights in California: DROP and the CCPA
California residents have two routes on top of the TruthFinder opt out.
- The CCPA. The California Attorney General says you can ask a business what it holds about you up to twice a year free of charge. You can also ask it to delete or correct your information or to stop selling or sharing it. Requests to know, delete and correct get an answer within 45 calendar days, with 45 more if the business tells you. Opt out requests must be handled within 15 business days at most. You can authorise someone to file for you.
- DROP. CalPrivacy’s free Delete Request and Opt out Platform sends one deletion request to over 600 registered data brokers. You confirm residency through the California Identity Gateway. Brokers must check DROP at least once every 45 days and your status can take up to 90 days to update.
- The limits. The Attorney General says publicly available information, including public property records, is not personal information under the CCPA. CalPrivacy says DROP does not reach public records such as vehicle or real estate ownership or voting records.
Is TruthFinder on the registry? TruthFinder, LLC appears in the previous year’s registry file with help@truthfinder.com as its contact. In that filing it reported 35,834 requests to delete, complying in whole or in part with 32,598 and denying 3,236, with a median of one day to respond. It was not in the current year’s download when we checked. That file looked incomplete to us, so look TruthFinder up on the CalPrivacy registry before you rely on DROP to reach it.
Other states have their own privacy laws. PeopleConnect’s own privacy policy, which covers its website rather than TruthFinder, lists rights for residents of many states with an appeal by email under the subject line Privacy Rights Appeal. The TruthFinder privacy policy did not load for our check, so we have not described its state by state rules.
How to clear the old Google result
TruthFinder’s opt out page does not say how long Google keeps showing an old report. Google says it can only remove things from Google Search results, so the TruthFinder opt out always comes first.
- If the page has gone, refresh the old copy. Select Request refresh on Google’s Refresh outdated content help page, enter the old TruthFinder address on the Page tab and select Submit. Our guide to the Refresh outdated content tool shows each screen.
- If the page is still live, use Results about you. Add your name, phone numbers, home addresses and email addresses, open the To review tab, expand the TruthFinder result and select Request to remove. See how to use Google Results about you.
- If the page gathers lots of your details or comes with threats, use the personal information route. Google lists contact details, doxxing and a significant amount of aggregated personal info without a legitimate purpose. Read how to remove personal information from Google first.
Google tracks requests as In progress, Approved, Denied or Undone and warns there may be a delay between approval and the result going. Results from government sites, educational sites, online newspapers and business websites get no remove option.
If your listing comes back after a TruthFinder opt out
The FTC says opting out does not delete public records, that your information could appear for sale again if those records change and that it may still show in the reports of relatives, neighbours or associates. Its advice is to check the sites again from time to time. TruthFinder itself says that if information about you shows up after you opt out, you should contact it so it can be cleaned up.
- Check every three months. That timing is our suggestion, not a TruthFinder rule. Search your name, phone number and street.
- Check after any change. A move, a new phone line or a new public record can create a listing that looks new.
- Keep a record. Save the listing address, a screenshot, the date of each request and every email you get back.
Mistakes that slow down a TruthFinder opt out
- Details that do not match the report. TruthFinder asks for your details as the report shows them. A newer address or a nickname may not match.
- One request for two people. Each report needs its own TruthFinder opt out.
- An inbox you never check. TruthFinder may email you with questions.
- Paying for a membership to opt out. The opt out page we read does not ask for any payment.
- Assuming the sister sites are covered. Check Instant Checkmate, US Search and Intelius separately.
- Forgetting Google. A TruthFinder removal does not refresh Google’s copy.
A worked example
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
A nurse in Fresno searches her name and finds two TruthFinder reports: one under her married name and one under her maiden name. She notes the address and date of birth on each, then sends two separate requests through the TruthFinder opt out page using her personal email.
Two days after her TruthFinder opt out both reports have gone, but her name still shows as a relative on her brother’s report, which TruthFinder says can happen. She checks Intelius and Instant Checkmate, finds one more listing and files there too. Because she lives in California she also sends a DROP request, then sets a reminder to search all four sites in three months.
When to ask for help
One TruthFinder opt out is a job most people can finish in an evening. Help makes sense when your details sit on many sites, when a record keeps coming back or when someone is using your address to frighten you. Our data broker removal service maps the people search sites that show you and files each opt out. Our personal reputation removal service looks at every result for your name. If your address has been posted with threats, read our doxxing removal page first. Our guide on how to remove your name from Google explains what Google will take out of a name search.
