Instagram content removal works when the post breaks Meta's rules or your legal rights and the report reaches the right form. How to start Instagram content removal yourself

Start with the route that matches your problem. These steps come from Instagram's own forms and help pages.

Report the post or account in the app. Tap the three dot menu, then Report. Pick the reason that matches. The review team decides whether the content or account comes down.
For a fake account, use the impersonation form. The Report an Impersonation Account on Instagram or Threads form asks whether the account is pretending to be you or someone you represent, such as your child. It asks for full names, both usernames and a photo of you holding your ID. Report one account per form.
For a photo or video of you, use the privacy form. The privacy rights form is for people who think their own privacy rights have been broken. If you cannot see the post, Instagram suggests asking a friend to share the link.
For copied work, use the rights owner forms. The copyright and trademark forms take up to 30 links each.
Protect yourself while you wait. Blocking stops an account finding or following you and the blocked person is not notified.

Impersonation, privacy and harassment on Instagram

Impersonation. Instagram says it can only act on impersonation reports from the person being impersonated or their authorised representative, such as a parent or legal guardian. If a friend spots the account, they can tell you, but the report needs to come from you. The form asks for the full name shown on the fake account, which sits next to its profile picture. Instagram prefers the ID photo saved as a JPEG.

Privacy. Instagram's privacy form is blunt. It removes content when the privacy laws of the country you are writing from require it. It also says that if you are an adult writing from the United States, it will not be able to remove the content for violating your privacy. Instagram encourages you to ask the person who posted to remove it first. It also says you will not get a confirmation email if it acts. For intimate images, Meta's Safety Centre says you can report nude or sexual photos or videos of yourself and points adults to StopNCII.org and teens to Take It Down. Harassment. Meta's bullying policy treats public figures and private people differently and allows more criticism of public figures. Its tools help while a report is reviewed. Restrict stops a bully seeing and interacting with your content. Limits hide comments and message requests from people who do not follow you. You can also control who tags or mentions you. Meta says it relies on someone reporting less severe breaches before it acts, so report each abusive comment rather than hoping it gets spotted.

The intellectual property route on Instagram

The copyright report form covers Instagram and Threads only. It asks whether you are the rights owner, reporting for your organisation or client, or reporting for someone else. You add a link to your original work, up to 30 links to the copies and a statement made under penalty of perjury, signed with your full name.

The trademark report form asks what the trademark is, where it is registered and its registration number. It warns that your contact details are shared with the person who posted. It also offers a separate counterfeit route and points registered brands to Meta's Brand Rights Protection tool.

Appeals and what Instagram will not remove

Instagram says that if your photo, video, comment or post was removed, you can ask it to take another look. If you reported something and it stayed up, the Oversight Board can review content Meta left up. You need an active account, a final decision from Meta and a reference ID that starts with IG. The Board takes only a small number of cases. When it decides, Meta is bound by the decision.

Instagram content removal will not work for:

Posts that are unkind but break no Community Standard.
Fair criticism of public figures.
Privacy complaints from adults in the United States, where the privacy form says it cannot remove content for that reason alone. Another rule, such as harassment or intimate image abuse, may still apply.
Borderline posts. Meta says that in more cases it now needs multiple reviewers to agree before it takes something down.
