Why Vancouver businesses need their own approach

Vancouver is a city of small, owner run businesses that compete hard for local attention: restaurants, studios, clinics, salons, trades and tour operators. Visitors from cruise ships and conferences read the same reviews as locals. Reviews can arrive in English, Chinese, Punjabi, French and many other languages.

British Columbia also has its own privacy law for private businesses and its own law against lawsuits that silence public speech. Both change how you should respond to a bad review. Good review removal Vancouver work keeps you on the right side of both while the platform decides on the review.

Which platforms matter most in Vancouver

Most review removal Vancouver requests start on these sites.

British Columbia and Canadian rules that shape review removal Vancouver cases

We opened each official source before writing this. None of this is legal advice.

RuleWhat the official source saysWhat it means for you
Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), explained by the OIPCPIPA covers private sector organisations in BC, including an individual in a commercial activity. You need consent before you disclose personal information. Disclosure must also be for purposes a reasonable person would consider appropriate.Do not reply to a review with a customer’s visit history, bookings or other details.
Protection of Public Participation Act (2019)A defendant can apply to dismiss a case that arises from expression on a matter of public interest. The court dismisses it unless the claim has substantial merit, there is no valid defence and the harm outweighs the public interest in protecting the expression.Suing a reviewer can backfire. If the case is dismissed, the applicant generally recovers full costs.
Competition Act, sections 52 and 74.01The Competition Bureau says it is against the law to make materially false or misleading representations to promote a product or business interest.Fake positive reviews to bury a bad one are a legal risk, not just a platform risk.
Competition Act, section 74.02Prohibits the unauthorised use or distortion of tests and testimonials.Do not edit or quote reviews out of context in your marketing.

What the Bureau did about employee reviews

In October 2015 the Competition Bureau announced that Bell Canada agreed to pay a $1,250,000 administrative monetary penalty after some employees were encouraged to post positive app reviews without saying who they worked for. The Bureau said reviews that are not independent can harm consumers and competition.

How to report and appeal a review on Google

Review removal Vancouver cases begin with the platform’s own tools. The first report goes in from your Business Profile, through Read reviews and the Report icon beside the review. If Google finds no violation, you get one appeal. Google’s help gives this appeal route:

  1. Open the Reviews Management Tool and confirm the account linked to your profile.
  2. Select your business.
  3. Select Continue, then Check the status of a review I reported previously and appeal options, then Continue.
  4. Select Appeal eligible reviews and choose the review. You can appeal up to 10 at once.
  5. Select Continue, then Submit an appeal, complete the form and select Submit.

Which Vancouver reviews can be removed

These are the patterns to look for in review removal Vancouver requests.

The former staff member

Google says a conflict of interest may include current or former employment. A cluster of reviews right after someone leaves, often with inside detail, fits the pattern. Timing is strong evidence in review removal Vancouver cases.

The person who never visited

No booking, no payment, no record. Under Google’s policy, a review must reflect a genuine experience.

The rival business

Google prohibits content posted on a competitor’s place to undermine it. On Yelp, business account holders may not review competitors.

Personal details in a review

Google bans sharing personal information without consent. If a review names a staff member’s home or a client’s health condition, that alone can qualify. For details that also show up in search, see removing personal information from Google.

Harassment or hate

Google removes harassment and hate speech. A review in any language that attacks someone for who they are breaks the rule.

What stays up

A long wait, a price that felt high or a class that was too crowded are real experiences. Review removal Vancouver style is review removal by the rules, so those stay. Our page on what we cannot remove covers the rest.

What evidence Vancouver businesses usually hold

Studios and clinics hold booking systems and class rosters. Restaurants hold reservations and till records. Trades hold quotes, invoices and job photos. Add staff records and exit dates and most review removal Vancouver cases have what they need. Under PIPA, those records stay inside your business. You run the checks and tell us the result. We never ask for customer data.

A worked example: the instructor who left

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

A yoga studio in Kitsilano parts ways with an instructor. Within five days, three Google reviews call the studio unsafe and the owner dishonest. None of the three names appear in the booking system. One reviewer’s profile shows the same surname as the former instructor.

  1. The owner saves dated screenshots of all three reviews.
  2. She checks the booking system, payment records and staff file and writes down what she found.
  3. She reports each review on Google for conflict of interest and for content that does not reflect a genuine experience.
  4. She wants to reply that one reviewer “has never attended a class”. She stops, because that would disclose what her records say about a person. She posts a short general reply instead.
  5. She does not ask friends to post five star reviews to balance things out.

It is now up to Google. The owner has kept to the platform rules, BC privacy law and the Competition Act. That is what careful review removal Vancouver work looks like.

How long it takes

Review removal Vancouver timelines depend on the platform. For Google, the published guide is several days for a typical evaluation. Yelp’s terms give no timing either. Nothing here is a promise of timing.

What to do if the platform says no

If review removal Vancouver efforts fail on Google, use the one appeal with clear facts. For content that may be unlawful, Google’s legal help page starts with a Create a request button. A BC lawyer can advise on the defamation route, keeping the Protection of Public Participation Act in mind. If you think a business has posted fake reviews about you, the Competition Bureau accepts complaints through its website.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Vancouver business delete a Google review?

No. Removal is Google’s decision. What a business can do is report a review that breaks Google’s policies.

Can I reply to a review with what my records show about the customer?

Be careful. The OIPC’s guide to PIPA says BC businesses need consent before disclosing personal information, so keep replies general.

Is it risky to sue a reviewer in British Columbia?

It can be. Under the Protection of Public Participation Act, a court dismisses a case about expression on a matter of public interest unless strict tests are met. If it is dismissed, the applicant generally recovers full costs.

Are fake positive reviews illegal in Canada?

The Competition Bureau says materially false or misleading representations to promote a business are against the law. It took action against Bell Canada in 2015 over undisclosed employee reviews.

Does review removal Vancouver cost anything upfront?

No. There is nothing to pay upfront on a qualifying case. You pay only if the review is taken down.

Do you work outside Vancouver?

Yes. We work across Canada and the US, as well as the UK, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland.
