Written by the Removal Lab team.

Has one unfair review been sitting at the top of your Google profile for weeks? You want to remove a Google review like that as fast as possible. Here is the short answer. A business owner cannot delete a Google review. Google removes a review only when it breaks Google’s content policies. Removal Lab helps businesses check whether a review qualifies and builds the evidence for a dispute.
The quick version: how to remove a Google review
1. Check the review against Google’s policies.
2. Report it from your Business Profile.
3. Track it in the Reviews Management Tool.
4. Use your one time appeal if Google says no.
5. Reply calmly while you wait.
Can a business owner delete a Google review?
No. There is no delete button for reviews on your own profile. Google’s own help page says owners can flag a review, but only reviews that break its policies are eligible for removal.
That changes the question you should ask. It is not “how do I remove a Google review I dislike?” It is “does this review break a rule?” If it does, you have a real case. If it does not, your reply matters more than the report.
Which Google reviews can you remove?
You can only remove a Google review that fits one of Google’s policy areas. Google publishes a list of prohibited and restricted content for Maps and reviews. These are the categories that come up most for businesses.
| Policy area | What it looks like in a review |
|---|---|
| Fake engagement | The reviewer never visited or used the business. Paid, duplicated or automated reviews. |
| Rating manipulation | Coordinated reviews meant to push a rating down, including reviews from competitors or former staff. |
| Off topic | Rants, political or social commentary or posts not about a real experience at the business. |
| Offensive content | Personal attacks or unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing. |
| Harassment | Threats, doxxing or targeting a named person. |
| Personal information | Sharing private details about staff or owners without consent. |
| Impersonation | Someone posing as another person or organisation. |
| Hate speech | Dehumanising content aimed at protected groups. |
| Obscenity and profanity | Profanity used to offend or attack. |
| Advertising and solicitation | Promotions, links or contact details placed inside a review. |
We explain each category in more depth in our guide to which Google reviews break the rules.
How to remove a Google review step by step
Google gives business owners two routes to remove a Google review that breaks the rules. The first is directly from your Business Profile.
- Open your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
- Next to the review, select the Report icon.
- Choose the reason that matches the policy it breaks.
- Select Send report.
The second route is the Reviews Management Tool. You confirm your account, select the business and report the review there. This tool is also where you check progress and appeal.
Pick the reason carefully. It is the most important choice you make when you try to remove a Google review. A report that names the right policy is far easier for a reviewer at Google to act on than a vague one.
How do you check the status after you remove a Google review request?
Go back to the Reviews Management Tool. You will see one of these statuses.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Decision pending | Google has your report but has not finished checking it. |
| Report reviewed, no policy violation | Google found no violation. You can appeal this decision. |
| Escalated, check your email for updates | Your appeal is with Google. The final decision arrives by email. |
What happens if Google says no?
You get one more chance to remove a Google review after a refusal. You get one appeal. Google allows a one time appeal for a reported review that it decided not to remove. You can appeal up to 10 reviews at once.
Use it well. Most rejected reports fail because the evidence was thin, not because the review was fine. Before you appeal, gather what proves the policy breach. That could be booking records that show the reviewer was never a customer. It could be a pattern of reviews posted on the same day. It could be screenshots of the reviewer’s other posts.
How long does Google take to remove a review?
Google says its evaluation typically takes several days. It does not publish a timeline for appeals. In practice some reports clear quickly and others take longer, especially once they are escalated. Plan for a wait whenever you try to remove a Google review.
Which reviews will Google not remove?
Google is clear that you should not report a review just because you disagree with it. Google does not step into disputes between a business and its customers. A harsh review from a real customer who describes a real experience will usually stay.
If you cannot remove a Google review like this, that is not the end of the road. A calm, factual reply can turn a bad review into proof that you care. Future customers read the reply as closely as the review.
What should you never do?
- Do not post fake positive reviews to bury the bad one. That is fake engagement under Google’s own policy.
- Do not threaten the reviewer. In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since late 2024, bans suppressing reviews through legal threats, intimidation or false accusations.
- Do not offer money or discounts in exchange for deleting or changing a review.
- Do not report every negative review. It wastes your reports and weakens the ones that matter.
How should you reply while you wait to remove a Google review?
You cannot remove a Google review with a reply, but a good reply protects you while the report is checked. Keep it short and human. Thank the person. Say you take it seriously. Offer a way to talk privately. Never reveal private details about the customer. If you believe the reviewer was never a customer, say so politely and invite them to get in touch with their booking details.
When does it make sense to get help to remove a Google review?
Most owners can remove a Google review that is clear spam on their own. Help is worth it when the review sits at the top of your profile, when it is costing you calls or when Google has already said no once and you only have the appeal left.
Removal Lab starts with a free eligibility check. We read the review against Google’s policies, tell you honestly whether it qualifies and build the evidence for the dispute. There is no upfront payment on qualifying cases. If a review does not break the rules, we will tell you that too. You can also read more about our Google review dispute help and business review removal service.
Not sure if your review qualifies?
Send it to us for a confidential review. We will tell you where it stands within one business day.
A worked example: how one owner managed to remove a Google review
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
Picture a small accounting firm. On a Tuesday it gets a one star review that says the firm “lost my tax file and charged me twice”. The owner checks the records. There is no client by that name. No invoice. No email. The review also mentions a service the firm does not offer.
The owner did three things right. First, a calm reply: “We take this seriously, but we cannot find a client under this name. Please contact us at the office so we can look into it.” Second, screenshots with the date and the reviewer name. Third, a report under the reason that matched, with a note that no record of the person existed and that the service described is not offered.
Google came back with no violation found. That can happen on a first report. The owner used the one time appeal and attached a short, factual summary of the evidence. Nine days later the review was gone. The lesson is not that every case ends this way. It is that the evidence and the appeal did the work, not the complaint.
What to send us if you want help to remove a Google review
If you would rather have a specialist handle it, this short list speeds everything up.
- The link to the review, or a screenshot that shows the reviewer name and the date.
- Whether you can find the person in your records. Tell us what you searched.
- Anything that links the reviewer to a competitor, a former employee or a known dispute.
- Whether you have already reported it and what Google said.
- Any other reviews that arrived around the same time.
You can also run the instant review check first. It gives you a rough chance in seconds and sends the result straight to us if you want a real answer.
How long it really takes to remove a Google review
| Stage | Typical time | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Report submitted | Minutes | Save a screenshot of the confirmation. |
| Google evaluation | Several days, by Google’s own description | Reply publicly in the meantime. |
| Decision | Shown in the Reviews Management Tool | If refused, prepare the appeal. |
| Appeal | No published timeline. Escalated cases arrive by email | Attach your strongest evidence once. |
| Removal | The review disappears from Maps and Search | Check from another device to confirm. |
Patience matters. Report each review once, with the right reason and your evidence, then follow it in the Reviews Management Tool. Google says review evaluation typically takes several days.
Google compared with other platforms
People often ask whether it is easier to remove a Google review than a review on Trustpilot or Yelp. The rules are similar, but the tone differs.
| Platform | How reports work | What is different |
|---|---|---|
| Report from the Business Profile or the Reviews Management Tool. One appeal. | Clear statuses and a published policy list. | |
| Trustpilot | Flag from the business account under one of five reasons. | Flagged reviews stay visible while checked, except harmful ones. |
| Yelp | Report under content guidelines. | Yelp watches for businesses that over report. |
| Glassdoor and Indeed | Report under community guidelines. | Reviewers are anonymous, so patterns matter more. |
Our guides on how to remove a Trustpilot review and Yelp review removal cover the differences in detail.
Mistakes that stop people removing a Google review
- Reporting under the wrong reason. Pick the reason that matches your evidence, such as fake engagement for a review from someone who was never a customer.
- Arguing in the reply. It changes nothing at Google and puts future customers off.
- Using the appeal too early. You get one. Use it with the evidence gathered, not in frustration.
- Reporting honest reviews. It wastes the reports that matter and signals to Google that the business reports everything.
- Buying positive reviews to dilute the bad one. That breaks Google policy and, in the United States, the FTC rule on reviews.
After you remove a Google review
Once a review is gone, three habits keep the profile healthy. Ask real customers for honest reviews after every good job, with no incentives. Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days. Check the profile weekly so a new fake review does not sit unnoticed for months. If you want to remove a Google review again later, you will already have the records in order.
Country notes: how to remove a Google review in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia
Google’s policies are global, so the steps to remove a Google review are the same wherever you are. The law around reviews differs. That changes what you should never do.
United States
The FTC rule on consumer reviews and testimonials has been in force since late 2024. It bans fake reviews, bans buying positive reviews and bans suppressing honest reviews through legal threats, intimidation or false accusations. Civil penalties apply per violation. If a company offers to remove a Google review by posting fake five star reviews or by pressuring the reviewer, that offer puts your business at risk. Our New York page covers the local picture.
Canada
Canadian competition law treats fake or misleading reviews as deceptive marketing. Privacy law matters when a review publishes someone’s personal information. Removal Lab is based in Toronto, so Canadian businesses work with people in their own time zone. See review removal in Toronto.
United Kingdom
UK rules treat fake reviews and the hiding of genuine ones as unfair business practice. Trustpilot is used far more in the UK than in North America, so UK businesses often need to remove a Google review and a Trustpilot review at the same time. Our UK page explains both.
Australia
Australian consumer law has some of the strongest penalties anywhere for fake reviews and for removing genuine ones. Working through Google’s own reporting system, with evidence, is the only safe way to remove a Google review in Australia. See review removal in Australia.
How to remove a Google review you wrote yourself
Left a review in the heat of the moment? This is the one case where you can remove a Google review in seconds, because it is yours. Google Maps Help gives these steps.
On a computer
- Open Google Maps in your browser.
- Click the Menu button at the top left.
- Click Your contributions, then Reviews.
- Next to the review, click More.
- Select Delete review and follow the steps on screen.
On an Android phone or tablet
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap Contribute, then View your profile.
- Scroll down and tap See all reviews.
- Next to the review, tap More.
- Tap Delete review and follow the steps on screen.
Would you rather soften it than delete it? Choose Edit review instead. Google says the date of your last edit then shows as the review’s post date.
If Google removed your review
Google Maps Help says it does not reinstate reviews removed for policy violations. There is one route back. Google’s appeals page says you can appeal a content removal once, up to 1 year after it was removed, from your Google Maps profile page. If the appeal is approved, the content is restored. Google adds that appeals are only open for some types of violation.
Can you remove a Google review on a business you do not own?
You cannot delete it, but you can report it. Google Maps Help is plain about this. You cannot contact the person who left an inappropriate review or delete someone else’s review yourself. Anyone can report a review that breaks the rules, whether or not they own the business.
Report it on a computer
- Go to Google Maps in a browser.
- Search for the business name or address and select it.
- Select Reviews.
- Scroll to the review, click the three dot menu and choose Report Review.
- Complete the form and click Submit.
Report it in the Google Maps app
- Open the Google Maps app and find the business.
- Swipe until you reach the reviews.
- Tap the three dot menu next to the review and select Report Review.
- Complete the form and tap Submit.
Google says choosing Not helpful does not report a review. Use Report Review when a review breaks a rule.
When would you need this? A review on someone else’s listing might share your home address, attack you by name or come from a fake account. The same Google policies apply. Our guide to removing personal information from Google covers wider privacy requests. For a review about you as a person, see personal reputation removal.
Follow your report
The Google Maps app has a Reports section that lists the reviews and media you reported. Each report carries one of five statuses.
| Status | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Processing report | Google has your report. No decision yet. |
| Content removed | The review is gone from Maps. |
| Content not removed | It stays. Google says it did not have enough information to support removal, or the reporting account is restricted. |
| Content restored | It came back because Google found new information that supports it. |
| Report Canceled | The content or place was edited or removed, so the report was closed. |
If the content is not removed, Google says you may be eligible to submit one appeal.
Can you report many Google reviews at once?
A wave of fake reviews makes everyone want a bulk button. Google’s help pages describe none. Each review is reported on its own. Here is what Google does offer when there are many.
| Situation | What Google offers |
|---|---|
| Several reviews Google refused to remove | One appeal in the Reviews Management Tool, with up to 10 reviews selected in a single submission. |
| One account behind several reviews | Report the user profile in the Google Maps app: Business, Reviews, the reviewer’s name, More, then Report. |
| A sudden run of one and two star reviews, then a demand for money | The merchant extortion report form. Google asks for direct links to all the reviews you believe are part of the attempt. |
| Genuine reviews vanished after a spam sweep | Google says its automated spam detection may remove legitimate reviews by mistake. Its help page points you to support. |
Report each review under the reason that fits it best. Reporting every negative review in one go wastes effort on the ones that do not qualify. Our guide to a fake Google review from a competitor shows how to spot a coordinated attack. If several reviews need work at once, our Google review removal service starts with a free check.
Questions business owners ask us every week
Can I remove a Google review from my own account?
No. There is no delete option for owners. You report, Google decides.
Does replying help me remove a Google review?
Not directly. A reply changes what readers think, not what Google decides. It is still worth doing well.
Can a marketing agency remove a Google review for me?
An agency can report it on your behalf if it manages your Business Profile. It cannot force a removal any more than you can.
What if the review has no text, only one star?
It can still be reported if it breaks a policy, for example if the account is clearly fake or linked to a competitor. Without text the evidence has to come from the pattern.
Should I remove a Google review that is three stars and fair?
No. Fair reviews, even mixed ones, build trust. Readers are suspicious of profiles with nothing but five stars.
How many reviews can I report at once?
As many as break the rules. Google lets you appeal up to ten at a time in the Reviews Management Tool.
One last point. The people who succeed at this are rarely the angriest. They are the ones who kept calm, kept records and used the appeal once with everything attached. If that sounds like more admin than you have time for, that is what we are here for. Send the link and we take it from there.
