Restaurant review removal with Removal Lab

A scathing review of your Sunday roast. You do not serve roast. You do not open on Sundays. Review removal for restaurants and hotels is about volume and speed. Hospitality gets more reviews than any other trade, which means more fake ones, more wrong venue mistakes and more competitor games. Removal Lab checks the ones that worry you against Google, Yelp and TripAdvisor policies, builds the evidence and reports them properly. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. Restaurant review removal and hotel review removal both start with one question: does the review break a rule?

What usually qualifies for restaurants and hotels

Reviews about a different venue, reviews from people who never visited, reviews from rival owners or staff, reviews with threats aimed at a named employee and reviews that publish private details. A real guest who did not enjoy the evening is allowed to say so.

What we see most often with restaurants and hotels

SituationUsual route
Review describes a different venueOff topic or wrong business. The review’s own details are the evidence.
No booking, no order, no visitNot a genuine experience. Reservation and POS records help.
Rival restaurant or former staffConflict of interest and rating manipulation.
Review attacks a named waiter or receptionistHarassment and offensive content policies apply.
Review demands a refund in exchange for editingReport the threat and keep the messages.

Why reviews matter so much for restaurants and hotels

Diners and travellers compare three places and book the one with the better rating. A single unfair review on a quiet night can move you from first choice to third. Fast, calm replies plus clean reports on the reviews that break the rules keep the rating honest.

How restaurant review removal works on Tripadvisor

Tripadvisor publishes detailed review guidelines. Many of them speak directly to restaurants and hotels. Restaurant review removal on Tripadvisor works when a review breaks one of them. These are the rules that matter most for venues.

Tripadvisor ruleWhat it looks like in a venue
Reviews must be based on a first hand experienceA review from someone who only spoke to you on the phone. Tripadvisor says it will not post those
Reviews must be submitted within one year of the experienceA guest reviewing a stay from two summers ago
No reviews from people who work or worked at the property, or from relatives or friends of staff or ownersA former chef venting after leaving
Owners or employees of a similar business within 10 miles or 16 km may not review competing propertiesThe bistro down the road posting about your menu
Reviews for a property that does not match a listed business are removedA review meant for a hotel with a similar name in another city
Blackmail is not allowedA guest who threatens a bad review unless they get a refund or an upgrade, in bad faith
Review content generated by AI is not permittedA long, generic review that reads like a template

Tripadvisor also says a guest who mentions they will write a review after a real problem, such as an incorrect restaurant order, is not blackmailing you. The line is a bad faith demand for something of value. To report a single review, Tripadvisor points to the reporting function on its site. For fraud patterns, paid reviews or employee incentive schemes it asks businesses to email contentintegrity@tripadvisor.com. See Tripadvisor review removal for the full process.

Management responses: what not to write

A careless reply can undo a restaurant review removal case. Your reply is public and Tripadvisor will remove it if it breaks the rules. Its management response guidelines say you must not:

Report fraud, do not announce it

Tripadvisor bars management responses that accuse a reviewer of review fraud. If you believe a review is fake, report it and keep your reply about the guest experience. Tripadvisor says compliant responses are typically published within 48 hours. For Google replies, see how to respond to a negative Google review.

Restaurant review removal on Google, step by step

Restaurant review removal on Google follows the steps in Google’s own help pages.

  1. Open your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
  2. Choose the flag icon next to the review.
  3. Pick the reason that fits the breach, such as conflict of interest, off topic or personal information.
  4. Select Send report.
  5. Check the Reviews Management Tool. If it says Report reviewed, no policy violation, you can send a one time appeal for up to 10 reviews at once.

Google says a conflict of interest may include current or former employment. That covers the former waiter. Its off topic rule says content should be based on your experience at a specific location. That covers the review written for the wrong branch.

Evidence restaurants and hotels already have

Good records are the backbone of restaurant review removal. Restaurants and hotels already keep detailed ones. Use them, but only share what the platform needs. Never post guest details in public.

Rules that keep honest venues safe

Restaurant review removal only works if your own house is in order. These rules apply to the venue as much as to the guest.

MarketRule worth knowing
United StatesThe FTC rule bans offering rewards tied to a positive or negative review. The Consumer Review Fairness Act makes booking terms that ban or penalise reviews void.
United KingdomThe Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 bans submitting or commissioning fake consumer reviews. See review removal in the UK.
AustraliaThe ACCC says incentives must apply whether a review is positive or negative and must be clearly disclosed.
Everywhere on TripadvisorOffering anything in exchange for reviews is prohibited, whatever the rating. So are staff bonuses for being named in reviews.

A free dessert for a five star review breaks these rules. So does a team prize for the most mentions. Honest service plus clean reports is the only safe mix.

A restaurant review removal example

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

A bistro in Melbourne gets an email after a busy Saturday. A guest says the steak was cold and demands a full refund for a table of six, or they will post one star reviews on Tripadvisor and Google. The bistro offers to replace the dish next time but declines the refund. That night the reviews appear.

StepWhat the bistro does
Keep the emailSaves the message that links the refund to the review threat.
Report on TripadvisorUses the reporting function and explains the bad faith demand, which Tripadvisor defines as blackmail.
Check GoogleFlags the Google review only if it breaks a Google rule. A cold steak on its own is an honest opinion.
Reply onceThanks the guest, says the kitchen has looked at it and leaves out the email.

This is restaurant review removal at its most typical. In this example the email is the whole case on Tripadvisor. On Google the outcome depends on what the review says. Hotels in busy tourist cities face the same pattern, as our Dubai page explains. For the wider picture, see fake review removal.

Related: Hotels and restaurants also get reviews on Booking.com and OpenTable. Each has its own rules.

How Removal Lab works

  1. Tell us what is out there. Send the link or a screenshot. It takes two minutes.
  2. We check it against the platform rules. A real specialist reads the content and tells you honestly whether it qualifies. No charge for this.
  3. We build the case and file it. Evidence, the right policy, the right channel.
  4. You pay only when it is gone. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. If the platform says no, you owe nothing.

What we will never do

In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since late 2024, bans fake reviews and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. Working by the rules is the only way that protects you.

Frequently asked questions

Can a restaurant remove a Google review?

Only Google can remove it. A restaurant can report reviews that break Google policy and Removal Lab builds that case.

What about TripAdvisor reviews?

TripAdvisor has its own content guidelines and reporting tools. Reviews that are not based on a real stay or visit, or that break its rules, can be reported.

A guest threatened a bad review unless we refunded them. What now?

Keep the messages. Platforms treat this as a policy issue and the messages are your evidence.

How fast can this move?

Google says reported reviews are usually evaluated within several days. We reply to you within one business day.

What does it cost?

The check is free. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment.

Can a restaurant offer a free dessert for a five star review?

No. Tripadvisor prohibits offering anything in exchange for reviews whatever the rating. In the United States the FTC rule also bans incentives tied to a positive or negative review.

How long after a visit can a guest review on Tripadvisor?

Tripadvisor says reviews must be submitted within one year of the experience. A review of a visit older than that can be reported.

Removal Lab does not work for any platform and cannot remove content directly. Every decision is made by the platform. Offices in Toronto and New York. Serving clients in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland.
