Ever had a Yelp review from someone who clearly walked into the wrong restaurant? Yelp review removal works only when a review breaks Yelp’s content guidelines. Yelp is strict with businesses, so a clumsy report can do more harm than good. Removal Lab checks each review against the guidelines, tells you which ones qualify and files a clean, evidence based report. No upfront payment on qualifying cases.
Yelp review removal in one minute
Yelp removes reviews that are not based on a real customer experience, that contain threats, hate or private information, that promote another business or that are about the wrong business. Yelp keeps honest negative reviews. We help you spot the ones that break the rules.
Which Yelp reviews can be removed?
| Reason | Example |
|---|---|
| No first hand experience | A review written about a friend’s visit or copied from elsewhere. |
| Conflict of interest | Posted by a competitor, a former employee or someone paid to post. |
| Private information | Names of staff, phone numbers or private facts. |
| Threats, harassment or hate | Content aimed at a person. |
| Promotional | Plugs another business or includes links. |
| Wrong business | Describes a different location or company. |
Yelp also uses its own recommendation software. Some reviews are hidden as not recommended without anyone reporting them. That is separate from removal and we explain the difference before you start.
Why Yelp review removal needs care
Yelp warns businesses against asking customers for reviews and against rewarding reviews. Our approach is to report only reviews with a real policy match and to back each one with evidence.
What to do while you wait
Respond publicly once. Keep it short, calm and specific. If the review describes a visit you cannot find, say so politely and ask the person to contact you. Readers trust owners who answer well.
Who we help with Yelp review removal
Restaurants, salons, dental and medical clinics, auto repair shops, contractors and other local businesses across the United States and Canada. Send us the review link and we reply within one business day.
How Yelp actually handles a reported review
Yelp has two separate systems and people mix them up all the time. The first is the recommendation software. It decides, on its own, which reviews show on your main page and which are tucked away under “not currently recommended”. Nobody at Yelp reads those. The second is the Content Guidelines, enforced by human moderators when a review is reported. Yelp review removal only ever comes from the second system.
Business owners report a review from the business account by choosing “Report review” and picking a reason. Yelp says its moderators look at the report, may ask the reviewer for more information and will remove the review if it breaks the guidelines. If it does not, the review stays, whatever the owner thinks of it. That is the whole game. Yelp review removal is a policy argument, not a popularity contest.
Two things Yelp will not do
Yelp will not remove a review because it is negative. Yelp will not move a recommended review into the hidden section because the owner asked. Both requests are refused every time. The second one can draw attention you do not want.
The Yelp guideline breaches that qualify
| Guideline | What it covers | Evidence that helps |
|---|---|---|
| Not a first hand experience | The reviewer is describing someone else’s visit, or never visited at all | Records that show no visit or booking |
| Conflict of interest | Competitors, current or former staff, friends and family of the owner, or anyone paid | Proof of the link, such as staff records |
| Privacy | Full names of staff, home addresses, photos of people who did not consent | A screenshot that shows the private detail |
| Threats, harassment, hate speech | Threats of harm, slurs, content targeting a protected group | The exact words, saved in a screenshot |
| Promotional content | Links, offers, another business pushed inside the review | The link or offer inside the review |
| Not relevant to a consumer experience | Political rants, commentary on news, reviews of a dispute rather than a visit | A short note on why the text is not about a visit |
| Wrong business | A review about a different location or a business with a similar name | Proof the review describes another location or business |
| Demands or extortion | A reviewer who threatened a bad review unless given a refund | The saved message with the demand |
That last row deserves attention. Yelp has a specific “Consumer Alert” programme and takes review extortion seriously. If a customer wrote to you saying “refund me or I post a one star review”, keep the message. It is the strongest piece of evidence in Yelp review removal.
Why Yelp is harder than Google and what that means
Yelp is openly suspicious of business owners. Its public position is that it protects consumers from businesses that try to game their rating. So an owner who reports five reviews in a week looks, to Yelp, like exactly that kind of business. Yelp review removal has to be selective. We only report a review when we can name the guideline it breaks and point to something Yelp can check. One strong report is worth more than ten hopeful ones.
Yelp also hates solicitation. Asking customers to leave reviews, even politely, is against its guidelines and the software is built to suppress reviews that look solicited. That is why a sudden run of five star reviews after a bad one tends to end up in the hidden section. Do not try it. It damages the case we are building.
What to check before we file
You do not need to send us customer data. You need to check your own records and tell us what you find.
| Question | Where the answer usually is | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Did this person visit? | Bookings, point of sale, CRM, sign in sheet | Not first hand if no match |
| Does the date make sense? | Opening hours, closure days, staff rota | Experience cannot have happened as described |
| Does the reviewer know a competitor? | Their Yelp profile, their other reviews | Conflict of interest |
| Have they reviewed you before? | Your review history | Duplicate or pattern |
| Did they ask for anything first? | Email, messages, call log | Demand or extortion |
| Is anyone named? | The review text | Privacy breach |
If the answers are all “no, it looks like a real unhappy customer”, we will say so. That is not a case for Yelp review removal. It is a case for a good reply and a better next visit.
The reply that works on Yelp
Yelp lets owners reply publicly and message privately. Use the public reply once. Keep it short, specific and free of excuses. “Thank you for the feedback about the wait on Saturday. We were short two staff that evening and it showed. We have changed the rota and would be glad to look after you properly next time.” Never argue. Never say the review is fake in public, even if it is. Never offer a discount in the reply, which Yelp treats as buying a change of rating.
A note on the hidden section
If a genuine positive review has landed in "not currently recommended", there is nothing we or you can do to move it. Yelp’s software decides and does not take requests. Yelp review removal never touches that section. We would rather tell you that now than take your money for it.
Restaurants, salons, dentists, contractors and law firms
Yelp carries the most weight for walk in and local service businesses. Restaurants and cafes get wrong venue reviews and no show reviews. Salons and spas get privacy breaches when stylists are named. Dental and medical practices cannot reply with facts because of privacy law, so the policy route is the only route. Contractors get reviews from people who received a quote and never became a customer. Law firms get opposing parties. We have a page for each of those and the Yelp section of every one of them links back here, because Yelp review removal follows the same guidelines whatever the trade.
Timelines, costs and what you are paying for
Yelp publishes no fixed timeline for reports. Simple cases with a clear breach can move in days. Cases that need a moderator to contact the reviewer take longer. We update you at each stage and never give a date Yelp has not given us. The check is free. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment and you pay only when the review is gone. You are paying for the reading, the evidence, the report written in Yelp’s own language and the follow up, not for a promise. No honest Yelp review removal service can promise an outcome, because Yelp makes every decision.
Yelp’s own list of reviews you can report
Yelp for Business has a help page on when to report a review. It groups the reasons below. If a review fits none of them, Yelp review removal through a report is unlikely and a calm reply is the better use of your time.
| Group | Examples Yelp gives |
|---|---|
| Authenticity and conflicts of interest | The reviewer appears to be a competitor or former employee, appears to be affiliated with the business, receives payment or other incentives for the review or has an apparent conflict of interest. The review promotes the business or a competitor. |
| Content relevance | The review is about someone else’s consumer experience, is about a different business or does not focus on the reviewer’s own experience. It mainly disputes another Yelper’s review, appears to be copied from another source or describes extraordinary circumstances such as stories fuelled by the media. |
| Inappropriate content | Hate speech, lewd commentary, threatening language, private information about employees or patrons and other inappropriate material. |
| Pandemic related | Claims that someone caught COVID from the business or its staff, criticism for being closed during regular opening hours, complaints about safety measures such as masks and issues outside the business’s control such as government rules. |
Yelp also defines three of those words. A threat is a statement of intent to inflict pain, injury, damage or other hostile action. Hate speech attacks a person or group based on traits such as race, religion or sexual orientation. Lewd means crude and offensive in an overtly sexual way.
How to report a review: the first step in Yelp review removal
Reports go to Yelp’s human moderators, not to the recommendation software. Yelp’s support pages describe the route like this.
- Log in. Yelp says you must be logged in to report content.
- Report the review. Use the report link for that review.
- Help Yelp verify your claim. Yelp asks you to include information that helps it verify what you say. Name the reason from the table above and point to the proof.
- Wait for the moderators. They check the review against the Content Guidelines. Yelp says results may take several days.
- Check your email. Yelp emails the business owner or the person who reported the review once it has investigated. If the review is removed, Yelp typically tells the reviewer too.
- Ask Support if something is unclear. Yelp says to contact its Support team with questions about the response to a report.

What Yelp’s recommendation software looks at
Removal and recommendation are separate, as explained above. Yelp’s Trust and Safety page lists what the software looks for when it decides which reviews to recommend.
| Signal | What Yelp says it means |
|---|---|
| Conflicts of interest | Reviews that may come from people with hidden ties to the business |
| Solicited reviews | Reviews the owner or an employee probably asked for |
| Reliability | Reviews from less active users the software knows little about |
| Usefulness | Unhelpful rants or raves and irrelevant content |
Yelp says the software is entirely automated and weighs hundreds of signals of quality, reliability and user activity. No employee at Yelp can override it. Reviews that are not recommended can still be read through a link at the bottom of the page. They do not count in the star rating or the review count. Yelp also says advertising has no connection to how reviews are treated.
Yelp Consumer Alerts and when they appear
Yelp runs a Consumer Alerts programme to warn people about what it calls brazen attempts to manipulate ratings and reviews. Its support page says the team gathers evidence and runs stings before an alert goes up. The triggers it names are:
- Buying or rewarding reviews.
- Many reviews written from the same IP address.
- Threatening reviewers with legal action.
Yelp says an alert is generally removed after 90 days, as long as the behaviour has stopped. Its Don’t Ask for Reviews page adds that a pop up alert can appear when Yelp learns of reviews linked to incentives.
Alerts also appear when a business is suddenly in the news. Yelp’s software flags pages with unusual spikes in activity and a team then investigates. Yelp may place an alert over the reviews and stop new reviews being posted for a while. It uses an Unusual Activity Alert when a flood of reviews seems driven by a news story rather than real visits. It uses a Public Attention Alert when someone linked to the business is accused of, or targeted by, racist behaviour. After an alert comes down, Yelp may keep removing reviews driven by media coverage rather than first hand experience.
If your business is in the news
A wave of reviews from people who never visited is what this process exists for. Keep a list of the review links and when each one appeared. That record helps when you report reviews that are about the story rather than a visit.
What Yelp will not remove
- A review because it is negative or harsh. Yelp says removing user content is not something it takes lightly and that it generally lets users stand behind what they write.
- A review where you and the reviewer disagree on the facts. Yelp says it does not take sides in factual disputes.
- A not recommended review, on request. No employee can override the software in either direction.
- A review because you advertise. Yelp says advertising has no connection to how reviews are handled.
Yelp also closes the shortcut. Businesses cannot offer incentives for users to remove reviews. Yelp counts discounts, freebies, refunds, gift cards, contest entries, offers and deals as compensation. It says accepting compensation for posting or removing a review breaks its Terms of Service and could lead to the user’s account being closed.
Legal notes: court orders, Hassell v. Bird and threats
When a review is false and damaging, Yelp’s moderators still apply the Content Guidelines. Yelp’s support page says that if moderators decline to remove a review and you hold a final order from a court of competent jurisdiction explaining why the review is defamatory, you should contact Yelp’s Support team.
Courts have also limited what they can order Yelp itself to do. In Hassell v. Bird, the plaintiffs sued only the reviewer and won a default judgment. The trial court also ordered Yelp, which was never named or served in the case, to remove three of her reviews. The California Supreme Court reversed. The lead opinion held that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act barred that order against Yelp. The judgment still bound the reviewer herself. The lesson for owners is that a case against a reviewer does not automatically force Yelp to act, so speak to a lawyer before you sue.
Threats backfire. In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews treats it as unfair or deceptive to use an unfounded or groundless legal threat, intimidation or a public false accusation to stop a review or get one removed (16 CFR 465.7). Yelp also lists threatening reviewers with legal action as a trigger for a Consumer Alert. This is general information, not legal advice. If a review looks invented rather than unfair, our fake review removal page explains how we approach it.

How Removal Lab works
- Tell us what is out there. Send the link or a screenshot. It takes two minutes.
- We check it against the platform rules. A real specialist reads the content and tells you honestly whether it qualifies. No charge for this.
- We build the case and file it. Evidence, the right policy, the right channel.
- You pay only when it is gone. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. If the platform says no, you owe nothing.
What we will never do
- Promise a removal. Platforms decide, not us.
- Post fake reviews or pay anyone to delete one.
- Threaten or pressure the person who posted.
- Take money upfront for a case that does not qualify.
In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since late 2024, bans fake reviews and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. Working by the rules is the only way that protects you.
