How to remove a Yelp review with Removal Lab

Written by the Removal Lab team.

Did a review appear on your Yelp page from someone you are sure never walked through your door? If you want to know how to remove a Yelp review, the honest answer is that only Yelp can do it. It removes reviews that break Yelp’s Content Guidelines. Removal Lab wrote this guide from Yelp’s own help pages and guidelines so you can report the right reviews, understand the recommendation software and avoid the moves that make things worse.

Anyone researching how to remove a Yelp review soon learns that Yelp is careful about taking reviews down. It says removing content is not something it takes lightly. So learning how to remove a Yelp review is mostly about matching the review to a specific rule.

The quick version

  1. Claim your business page on Yelp for Business if you have not already.
  2. Read the review against Yelp’s Content Guidelines and pick the rule it breaks.
  3. On biz.yelp.com go to Reviews, find the review, click More Options (the three dots) and then Report Review.
  4. Explain the rule it breaks in plain words and send.
  5. Watch for Yelp’s email. You can also hover over the flag icon by the review to see its status.

Which Yelp reviews break the rules

Knowing how to remove a Yelp review starts with the rules. Yelp’s Content Guidelines have general rules for all content and extra rules for reviews. Here is what they say, in short.

Yelp guidelineWhat it means for a review
RelevanceReviews should address the core consumer experience. Yelp says they are not the place for rants about politics, a business’s employment practices or extraordinary circumstances.
Inappropriate contentNo threats, harassment, lewdness, hate speech or other bigotry.
Conflicts of interestNo reviews of your own business or employer, friends’ or relatives’ businesses, peers or competitors, or businesses in your networking group.
PrivacyNo private information. No full names of people unless they are commonly known by their full name.
Promotional contentNo promotional material outside Yelp’s advertising products.
Post your own contentNo copied content. Yelp also says not to use third party AI tools to create or revise reviews.
Personal experienceReviews should describe the reviewer’s own firsthand experience, not what they heard from others or saw in the news.
AccuracyReviews should be factually correct. Yelp does not take sides in factual disputes.
Demanding paymentReviewers must not threaten a negative review or offer to remove one to extract payment.
Review updates and repeated postsUpdates should reflect a new experience. No repeated posts about the same experience or the same content on several pages.

Yelp’s business help page on when to report a review also lists clear examples: the reviewer appears to be a competitor or former employee, appears to be affiliated with the business, is receiving payment or incentives, is promoting a business, describes someone else’s experience, reviews a different business, copied the review from elsewhere or includes private information about employees or patrons.

How to remove a Yelp review by reporting it

Here is how to remove a Yelp review through Yelp’s own reporting tools. Yelp says reporting from a business account may require you to claim your business page first. Then use one of these two flows. The labels are exactly as Yelp writes them.

On the Yelp for Business website

  1. Sign in at biz.yelp.com and open the Reviews section.
  2. Find the review and click More Options, the three dots.
  3. Click Report Review.
  4. Follow the prompts and explain which guideline the review breaks.

In the Yelp for Business app

  1. Find the review.
  2. Tap More Options on iPhone or the Overflow Menu on Android, shown as three dots.
  3. Tap Report Review.

After you report

Yelp’s moderators check the report against the Content Guidelines. Yelp says this can take several days. On the website you can hover over the flag icon next to the review to see whether it is still under review or whether Yelp decided not to remove it. Yelp emails its decision to the address on your account, which you can check in Account Settings. If the review comes down, Yelp also tells the reviewer.

Yelp’s recommendation software in plain words

Many owners asking how to remove a Yelp review are really asking about something else: reviews that move to a separate list without being deleted. That is Yelp’s recommendation software at work. The table below compares how to remove a Yelp review through a report with a review that is simply not recommended.

Yelp says the software is automated and maintained by its engineers. It looks at hundreds of signals of quality, reliability and user activity. It applies the same criteria to every business. It filters out reviews it sees as potentially unreliable, for example ones that may have been solicited, ones from a biased source such as a business owner or employee, or ones from users Yelp does not know enough about.

Reported and removedNot recommended
Who decidesYelp’s human moderators after a reportYelp’s automated software
WhyThe review breaks the Content GuidelinesThe software sees it as less reliable
Is it deleted?Yes, it comes off the pageNo. Yelp says it can still be read through a link at the bottom of the page
Counts in star rating? It is no longer on the pageNo. Yelp says it does not factor into the rating or review count
Can it change?Yelp does not describe reinstatement on the pages we readYes. Yelp says recommended reviews can change over time
Can a business influence it?Only by reporting a real rule breakNo. Yelp says advertising has no connection to how reviews are handled

One rule is easy to miss. Yelp’s Don’t Ask for Reviews policy says businesses should not ask anyone for reviews, including customers, friends and family. Yelp says asking may hurt your rating, because its software tries to spot requested reviews and not recommend them. Offering anything in return for a review, or for removing one, is also against the rules.

What if it does not work

  1. Read Yelp’s email. If moderators decided not to remove the review, the flag icon shows that too.
  2. Check for a clearer rule. The answer to how to remove a Yelp review is never that it is unfair. A report that only says that gives moderators nothing to act on. A report that shows a conflict of interest, a demand for payment or private information does.
  3. Contact Yelp Support with questions. Yelp says to contact its Support team if you have questions about the response to a report.
  4. Use a court order if you have one. Yelp says that if a review was found not to break its guidelines but you hold a final order from a court of competent jurisdiction declaring it defamatory, you should contact Yelp Support.
  5. Respond publicly. Yelp says owners can publicly respond to inaccuracies or message the reviewer directly through Yelp for Business. A calm, factual reply is there for future customers to read.

Mistakes to avoid

A worked example

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

Marco owns a pizza place. A one star review appeared from an account whose profile listed a job at a rival pizzeria two streets away. The review complained about his prices compared with the rival’s new menu.

Marco looked up how to remove a Yelp review, then signed in to biz.yelp.com, opened Reviews, clicked More Options on the review and chose Report Review. In his note he said the reviewer appeared to work for a competitor, which Yelp’s guidelines treat as a conflict of interest. He pointed to the employer named on the reviewer’s own profile. He did not argue about prices. He then hovered over the flag icon over the next few days to watch the status and waited for Yelp’s email.

Keep it to one rule

When you work out how to remove a Yelp review, the strongest report names one guideline and shows the proof. Make yours easy to decide.

How to reply to a Yelp review step by step

A report can take several days. A reply can go up today and it stays under the review for every future customer to read. Yelp’s business help page on responding to reviews sets out the steps below.

Before you reply

On the Yelp for Business website

  1. Open Reviews from the left hand menu.
  2. Find the review and click Comment for a public reply or Direct Message for a private one.
  3. Write your reply.
  4. Click the arrow icon on the right to send it.

In the Yelp for Business app

  1. Tap More in the bottom bar.
  2. Tap Reviews.
  3. Tap Comment or Direct message on the review.
  4. Write your reply and tap the arrow icon to send.

Public comment, direct message or thank you?

OptionWho sees itBest use
CommentAnyone who views your Yelp page. It sits below the review.Yelp suggests starting here, for praise and for criticism.
Direct MessageThe reviewer, through YelpSorting out a problem one to one. It can be sent on its own or alongside a public comment.
ThankOnly that reviewerA private thank you. The button appears on four and five star reviews only.

To change a public comment later on the website, click the three dot overflow menu to the right of it and choose Edit Comment or Remove Comment. For a critical review, Yelp’s advice is to collect your thoughts first, start with a public comment and take the high road.

How to remove a Yelp review with a report a moderator can act on

Yelp asks you to include information that helps it verify your claims. Moderators cannot check feelings. They can check facts. So keep the report short and give them something to look at.

  1. Name the problem in Yelp’s own words. Use the examples Yelp gives in its list of when to report, higher up this page, such as "the reviewer appears to be a former employee" or "the review is about a different business".
  2. Point to the exact sentence. Quote the part of the review that shows the problem.
  3. Give a fact Yelp can check. For example, the employer named on the reviewer’s own profile or the name of the business they actually describe.
  4. Leave out the argument. Skip how unfair the review feels and any debate about what happened. Yelp does not take sides in factual disputes.
Yelp exampleWhat to writeWhat to point to
The reviewer appears to be a competitor"The reviewer’s profile lists their employer as a competing business nearby."The profile detail
The review is about a different business"The review describes a car wash. We are a bakery and have never offered that service."Your business category and services
It mainly disputes another Yelper’s review"This review only argues with another user’s review and describes no visit."The lines that refer to the other review
Private information about employees"The review gives the full name and mobile number of a team member."The exact words
Payment or incentives for the review"The reviewer says they were offered a discount to post this."The sentence that mentions the incentive

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

If you report several reviews, write a separate note for each one. A single note that lists many reviews makes each one harder to check.

Can you ask the reviewer to take it down?

You can contact the reviewer. Yelp’s page on false or defamatory reviews lists a direct message through your Yelp for Business account as one of your options. Use it to fix the problem, not to bargain over the review.

Yelp says businesses cannot offer incentives for users to remove reviews. Its help page on freebies counts discounts, freebies, refunds, gift cards, contest entries, offers and deals as compensation. It says accepting compensation for posting or removing a review breaks Yelp’s Terms of Service. So a refund offered on the condition that a review comes down is on the wrong side of the line. A refund you would give anyway, with no strings, is a different thing. Just never tie it to the review.

A message that stays inside the rules

"Thank you for telling us about your visit. I am sorry it went wrong. I would like to understand what happened and put it right if I can. Could you reply here with the date of your visit?" No offer, no mention of the review coming down and no pressure.
