Remove my phone number from the internet with Removal Lab

Written by the Removal Lab team.

Getting calls and texts from strangers who already know your name? If you want to remove my phone number from the internet, in the words most people search with, work through three places: the reverse phone lookup and people search sites that publish it, Google’s results and the caller ID apps that label it. Nobody can wipe a number from every list, but you can take it off the pages strangers find.

You can do this yourself without paying anyone, or Removal Lab can handle it after a free, confidential case review, with no upfront payment on qualifying cases.

The quick version: remove my phone number from the internet

  1. Search every number you have used, in Google and on the big people search sites. Save each link.
  2. Report each Google result from the search page: More, Remove result, It shows my personal info and I don’t want it there, Contact Info.
  3. Opt out of every reverse lookup or people search record that shows the number.
  4. Unlist the number from Truecaller and remove it from your own public profiles.
  5. Search again every three months, or ask Removal Lab to check the links free of charge.

Where can I remove my phone number from the internet?

There is no single “remove my phone number from the internet” switch, because your number does not live in one place. Each place below has its own owner and its own route.

Step 1: Search your number the way strangers do

Before any “remove my phone number from the internet” request, see what strangers see. The FTC tells people to start their search of people search sites with a phone number or an address, then try their name. Nuwber, for one, says it draws on phone directories and third party suppliers.

Step 2: Remove phone number from Google search results

You can report a result straight from the search page. Sign in, then:

  1. Search your name, or your name with your city.
  2. Select the More icon, the three dots next to the result, to open About this result.
  3. Select Remove result, then It shows my personal info and I don’t want it there, then Contact Info.
  4. Enter your name and number exactly as they appear on the page, submit and select I’m done.

Google says you get an email confirming the request within a few hours. Follow it under Removal requests in Results about you, where Google also shows the reason if it says no.

Add every number you have had to Results about you. Google lets you list several phone numbers and can alert you to new results. Setup is covered in our guide to using Google Results about you. Our address removal guide covers the To review tab.

Know the limits before you file. Google says an approved removal sometimes hides a page only from searches that include your name. It also says removal only affects Search, so the number stays on the site until the site takes it down.

Step 3: Opt out of reverse phone lookup and people search sites

These sites are where most “remove my phone number from the internet” work happens. We have a full guide for each.

How to unlist your phone number on any other site

Search the site for your number. If a record about you appears, look for an opt out or privacy link and follow it to the end. If you cannot find one, the FTC suggests searching the site’s name with opt out or remove my information.

Expect one request per record. ThatsThem, for example, says search engines may take more than 5 to 7 days to drop its old page. That is how to unlist your phone number site by site. If your number sits on dozens of sites, our data broker removal service files them for you.

Caller ID apps and carrier listings

Sometimes your name pops up on a stranger’s screen before you say a word. Truecaller’s app listing says it shows who is calling even when the number is not in your contacts. Your “remove my phone number from the internet” list should include apps like this, not only websites.

Our Truecaller unlist guide covers its unlisting page and the privacy rights that help in the UK, the EU and Kenya.

We could not verify phone company caller name or directory rules on official pages, so they are not covered here. Ask your provider what it lists and how to unlist.

When your number is shared to harass you

A number posted with threats is not a directory problem. It is doxxing. Google’s personal information policy lets it remove two kinds of page: one that pairs your details with explicit or implicit threats or one that collects a large amount of your personal information with no legitimate purpose.

File those links with the Start removal request button on the personal information help page. If the number belongs to someone else, such as a parent you help, or to a person under 18, Google says to use its detailed removal form.

Keep a log of the calls. If you are in danger, call the police. Our guide to removing personal information from Google and our doxxing removal page cover the next steps.

Will the Do Not Call Registry stop the calls?

The Do Not Call Registry is not a “remove my phone number from the internet” tool. The FTC says it is a list that tells telemarketers which numbers not to call and that it does not block calls. It never reaches websites.

QuestionWhat the FTC says
Does it stop scam calls? No. Being on the Registry will not stop scammers making illegal calls.
Which calls are still allowed?Political, charity, debt collection, purely informational and survey calls, as long as there is no sales pitch.
Does it cost or expire?Registering a home or mobile number is free and never expires.
How do I sign up?At DoNotCall.gov, or call 1 888 382 1222 from the phone you want to register. Sales calls can take up to 31 days to stop.

California rights for phone numbers: DROP and the CCPA

For Californians, DROP turns “remove my phone number from the internet” into one request to many brokers. CalPrivacy’s Delete Request and Opt out Platform lets one free request reach over 600 registered data brokers. Residency is checked through the California Identity Gateway.

We have not covered other states, as this guide sticks to rules we could check on official pages.

How to keep your number off the internet

A “remove my phone number from the internet” sweep only lasts if you keep checking.

Watch family listings too. According to the FTC, a relative’s or neighbour’s report may still show you after you opt out of your own.

Mistakes to avoid

A worked example

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

A teacher in Columbus starts getting texts from strangers who know her name. She searches “remove my phone number from the internet” and then searches her own number. It shows on four people search sites and in two Google results.

She reports both Google results, adds her current and old numbers to Results about you, opts out of each listing and unlists from Truecaller. Three months later one listing has come back. She opts out again the same day.

When to ask for help

Ask for help when your number shows on many sites or returns after each opt out. Our personal reputation removal service reviews what a search for your name brings up. For other results under your name, read how to remove your name from Google.

There is no honest way to promise a permanent “remove my phone number from the internet” result. What works is one careful sweep, then regular checks.

It is harder. Google says it may not offer removal for business websites, so ask the business or directory to take it down.
