Looked yourself up and found a US Search profile with your address and relatives on it? The US Search opt out is free and is the same route as the Intelius opt out: open your profile, use the Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data link at the bottom of the page and submit a request for that profile. You can do it yourself, or Removal Lab can handle the US Search opt out for you.
Here is why it is the same route. US Search is not a separate company. Intelius, LLC lists US Search and US Search Pro as its trading names on the California data broker registry. Its registration describes one opt out for intelius.com, ussearch.com and pro.ussearch.com. The US Search website and its privacy policy blocked our checker, so this guide rests on those registry records. Confirm each screen as you go.
The quick version: US Search opt out
- Search US Search for your name and open the profile that is really you.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data.
- Select that specific profile and submit an opt out request for it.
- If it fails, use the US Search phone numbers or support@ussearch.com from the Intelius registration.
- Check Intelius too, then TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate, which run separate opt outs. Or send the links to Removal Lab for a free check.
US Search opt out at a glance
Each answer comes from the registration Intelius, LLC filed with California, its latest registry entry we could read, PeopleConnect or the FTC.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who runs US Search? | Intelius, LLC in San Diego, California, which lists Intelius, US Search and US Search Pro as its trading names. PeopleConnect lists US Search as one of its brands. |
| Does it share a route with another site? | Yes. The Intelius registration gives one opt out for intelius.com, ussearch.com, pro.ussearch.com and other similar people search websites the company owns and operates. |
| Where do I start? | On the profile itself, using the Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data link at the bottom of the page. |
| Does it cost anything? | The FTC says you can opt out of people search sites yourself for free. None of the official records we read mention a fee. |
| US Search phone and email | (888) 712 0108 or (833) 949 2444 and support@ussearch.com. US Search Pro has professional-support@ussearch.com. These come from the older Intelius registration. |
| Latest registry contact | support@mailer.intelius.com and 877 564 3253. |
| How long does it take? | Not published on any page we could open. In its latest filing Intelius, LLC reported a median of one day to answer deletion requests. |
| Covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act? | Intelius, LLC told the California registry that neither it nor its subsidiaries is regulated by the FCRA. |
How to opt out of US Search step by step
The Intelius registration describes the US Search opt out in one sentence. You visit the site, click the Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data link at the bottom of the page, select the specific person profile you want opted out and submit an opt out request for that profile. Here is that sentence turned into steps.
Step 1. Find the right profile
Search US Search for your full name and the places you have lived. Open the profile that matches your age, relatives and past addresses. Copy its web address for your records. The FTC suggests searching by phone number and address as well, because people search sites often hold more than one record for the same person.
Step 2. Use the link at the bottom of the page
Scroll to the foot of the page and look for Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data. Either one starts the US Search opt out, according to the registration. Our checker was blocked from the US Search site, so we cannot show what the next screen looks like. If you land on a page titled PeopleConnect Suppression Center, you are still on an official page. PeopleConnect links its own Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information to that centre.
Step 3. Select the profile and submit
The registration is specific: you select the person profile you want opted out and submit a request for that profile. So a US Search opt out works one profile at a time. If you appear twice, for example under an old surname, repeat the request for each one.
Step 4. Use phone or email if the page fails
The Intelius registration lists (888) 712 0108 and (833) 949 2444 for US Search privacy requests, plus support@ussearch.com. US Search Pro has its own address, professional-support@ussearch.com. That registration is older than the latest registry entry, which lists support@mailer.intelius.com and 877 564 3253. If one number no longer works, try the other route and keep a note of each US Search opt out request you send.
Step 5. Check both US Search and Intelius
The registration names both sites in the same opt out, but it does not say whether a profile you suppress on one disappears from the other. After a few days, which is our suggestion, search both sites again and repeat the US Search opt out wherever you still appear.
What the official records say about US Search
Because the US Search site blocked our checker, we could not list what a US Search profile shows. These are the facts we could confirm from official records before a US Search opt out.
| What we checked | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Legal company | Intelius, LLC, 501 W Broadway St, Suite 800, San Diego, CA 92101 |
| Trading names | Intelius, US Search and US Search Pro |
| Sites named in the opt out | intelius.com, ussearch.com and pro.ussearch.com, plus other similar people search websites the company owns and operates |
| Where privacy rights are explained | The registry entry points to the Intelius privacy policy. PeopleConnect also lists a separate US Search privacy policy, which blocked our checker |
| How PeopleConnect describes it | One of its people search brands, named for its legacy |
| Data about minors, precise location or reproductive health | Intelius, LLC told the registry it collects none of these |
| Old Classmates profiles | Classmates says people search results and reports may include information that is publicly available on the Classmates Service |
The Classmates point matters if you ever filled in a Classmates profile. Classmates says it may share information between the PeopleConnect brands and that you can opt out of its own service by removing your account.
US Search, Intelius and the other PeopleConnect sites
Plainly: the US Search opt out and the Intelius opt out are one route run by one company. What sets US Search apart is its own phone numbers and support addresses and its professional site, US Search Pro.
TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate are different. PeopleConnect lists them as sister brands, but each is its own company with its own registry entry and its own opt out page. A US Search opt out does not reach them, as far as any official record we read says.
| Site | Company in official records | Opt out route in official records | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intelius | Intelius, LLC | Do Not Sell My Personal Information or Suppress My Data link at the foot of your profile | Intelius opt out |
| US Search | Intelius, LLC, trading as US Search and US Search Pro | The same Intelius route, which names ussearch.com and pro.ussearch.com | This guide |
| TruthFinder | TruthFinder, LLC | Its own opt out page or the same two homepage links | TruthFinder opt out |
| Instant Checkmate | Instant Checkmate, LLC | Its own opt out page or the same two homepage links | Instant Checkmate opt out |
| ZabaSearch | Not confirmed | Check who runs the page you see | ZabaSearch opt out |
Is US Search a background check you can be judged on?
Intelius, LLC told the California registry that neither it nor its subsidiaries is regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. We could not read the US Search terms, so we cannot quote its own rules on how reports may be used.
The FTC’s summary of the FCRA explains the rules for real screening reports. A consumer reporting agency may share your file only with people who have a valid need. An employer needs your written consent. If information in your file is used against you, you must be told and given the agency’s details. You can dispute incomplete or inaccurate information with that agency.
So if a landlord or employer turned you down, start with the agency named in the notice. Use the US Search opt out for the people search profile.
What the US Search opt out does and does not remove
- The profile you select. The registration describes a US Search opt out request for that specific profile.
- Other profiles of you. Each needs its own request.
- The same profile on Intelius. Same company and same route, but check both sites.
- TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate. Separate companies with separate opt outs.
- Public records. The FTC says opting out does not delete information from public records.
- Google. Google keeps its own copy until it updates or you ask it to.
Your rights in California: DROP and the CCPA
California residents have two routes on top of the US Search opt out.
- The CCPA. The California Attorney General says you can ask a business what it holds about you up to twice a year free of charge. You can also ask it to delete or correct your information or to stop selling or sharing it. Requests to know, delete and correct get an answer within 45 calendar days, with 45 more if the business tells you. Opt out requests must be handled within 15 business days at most. You can authorise someone to file for you.
- DROP. CalPrivacy’s free Delete Request and Opt out Platform sends one deletion request to over 600 registered data brokers. You confirm residency through the California Identity Gateway. Brokers must check DROP at least once every 45 days and your status can take up to 90 days to update.
- The limits. The Attorney General says publicly available information, including public property records, is not personal information under the CCPA. CalPrivacy says DROP does not reach public records such as vehicle or real estate ownership or voting records.
Is US Search on the registry? US Search appears through Intelius, LLC in the previous year’s registry file. In that filing Intelius, LLC reported 26,933 requests to delete, complying in whole or in part with 25,431 and denying 1,502, with a median of one day to respond. It was not in the current year’s download when we checked. That file looked incomplete to us, so look Intelius up on the CalPrivacy registry before you rely on DROP to reach US Search.
Other states have their own privacy laws. PeopleConnect’s own privacy policy, which covers its website rather than US Search, lists rights for residents of many states with an appeal by email under the subject line Privacy Rights Appeal. The US Search privacy policy did not load for our check, so we have not described its state by state rules.
How to clear the old Google result
An old US Search profile can stay in Google for a while after the page changes. Google says it can only remove things from Google Search results, so the US Search opt out always comes first.
- If the page has gone, refresh the old copy. Select Request refresh on Google’s Refresh outdated content help page, enter the old US Search address on the Page tab and select Submit. Our guide to the Refresh outdated content tool shows each screen.
- If the page is still live, use Results about you. Add your name, phone numbers, home addresses and email addresses, open the To review tab, expand the US Search result and select Request to remove. See how to use Google Results about you.
- If the page gathers lots of your details or comes with threats, use the personal information route. Google lists contact details, doxxing and a significant amount of aggregated personal info without a legitimate purpose. Read how to remove personal information from Google first.
Google tracks requests as In progress, Approved, Denied or Undone and warns there may be a delay between approval and the result going. Results from government sites, educational sites, online newspapers and business websites get no remove option.
If your listing comes back after a US Search opt out
The FTC says opting out does not delete public records, that your information could appear for sale again if those records change and that it may still show in the reports of relatives, neighbours or associates. Its advice is to check the sites again from time to time. Check Intelius at the same time, because the two sites share a company and a route.
- Check every three months. That timing is our suggestion, not a US Search rule. Search your name, phone number and street.
- Check after any change. A move, a new phone line or a new public record can create a listing that looks new.
- Keep a record. Save the listing address, a screenshot, the date of each request and every email you get back.
Mistakes to avoid with a US Search opt out
- Suppressing the wrong profile. Match the age, relatives and past addresses first.
- Stopping at one profile. Each US Search removal works one profile at a time.
- Forgetting US Search Pro. It has its own support address in the registration.
- Assuming every PeopleConnect brand is covered. TruthFinder and Instant Checkmate need their own requests.
- Relying on old phone numbers alone. Start the US Search opt out from the profile link and keep the email routes as backup.
A worked example
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
A retired bus driver in Phoenix finds his home address on US Search. He opens the profile, scrolls to the bottom and selects Suppress My Data, then follows each screen for that profile.
A few days later the US Search profile has gone, but an older profile under his full middle name is still there. He repeats the US Search opt out for that one, checks Intelius and finds nothing more. TruthFinder still shows him, so he follows our TruthFinder guide, then asks Google to refresh both old results.
When to ask for help
One US Search opt out is a job most people can finish in an evening. Help makes sense when your details sit on many sites, when a record keeps coming back or when someone is using your address to frighten you. Our data broker removal service maps the people search sites that show you and files each opt out. Our personal reputation removal service looks at every result for your name. If your address has been posted with threats, read our doxxing removal page first. Our guide on how to remove your name from Google explains what Google will take out of a name search.
