Woke up to a one star review from someone you never served? You can dispute a Google review. Google calls it reporting. There is a formal path behind it. The catch is simple. Google only removes reviews that break its rules. Disagreeing is not enough. This guide shows how to dispute a Google review step by step, how to check the status and what to do when Google says no.
The quick version: how to dispute a Google review
1. Match the review to a Google policy.
2. Report it from your Business Profile.
3. Check the status in the Reviews Management Tool.
4. Appeal once if Google finds no violation.
5. Watch your email for the final decision.
What it means to dispute a Google review
There is no button called dispute. A Google review dispute is three steps: a report, a status check and an appeal. Google judges each step against its rules for user content. Google says review evaluation typically takes several days.
Knowing this saves time. Your job is not to prove the review is unfair. Your job is to show which rule it breaks.
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Dispute (report and appeal) | Asks Google to remove the review | The review breaks a Google rule |
| Public reply | Shows readers your side | Every negative review, fair or not |
| Legal request | Asks Google to act under local law | False statements of fact that cause real harm |
| More real reviews | Pushes the review down the list | Always, alongside the other options |
Can you dispute Google reviews? Who can and what qualifies
| Who | How they can dispute |
|---|---|
| Business owner or manager | Report from the Business Profile, then track and appeal in the Reviews Management Tool |
| Anyone on Google Maps | Report the review from Google Maps. Track it in the Reports section of the Google Maps app |
| The person who wrote it | Edit or delete their own review at any time |
| Reason | Chance it works |
|---|---|
| Spam or fake engagement, with no real visit | Good, with evidence |
| Off topic, for example about another business | Good |
| Conflict of interest, such as a competitor or former employee | Fair. Needs proof |
| Profanity, harassment or hate speech | Good |
| Personal information, such as a phone number | Good |
| A real customer who is unhappy | Low. Google keeps honest negative reviews |
| A review you think is unfair | Very low |

How to dispute a Google review step by step
- Open your Business Profile. Search your business name on Google while signed in, or open Google Maps.
- Select Read reviews.
- Find the review and select the Report icon next to it.
- Pick the reason that matches the rule it breaks. Spam and off topic are the most common.
- Select Send report. Write down the date and the reviewer name.
Tip
Report each fake review on its own. Pick the most precise reason. Spam fits a review with no real visit. Conflict of interest fits a competitor or a former employee.
How to dispute a review on Google from your phone
- Open the Google Maps app and find your business.
- Go to the Reviews tab.
- Tap the three dots next to the review.
- Choose Report review and pick the reason.
The status still lives in the Reviews Management Tool. Check it from a browser on your phone or computer.
What Google looks at when you dispute a Google review
Google does not publish its full checklist. These signals tend to decide disputes we see.
- Account history. A new account with one review looks different from a local guide with 200.
- Timing. Several reviews in a short burst often point to a spam wave.
- Matching text. The same words on many businesses suggest copy and paste.
- Content. Threats, slurs, phone numbers and off topic rants break clear rules.
- Links to you. A reviewer who works for a rival is a conflict of interest.
How to check the status of a Google review removal
Google tracks your report in the Reviews Management Tool. Open it, choose your business and look at the reviews you reported.
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Decision pending | Google has not finished checking | Wait. Google says this usually takes several days |
| Report reviewed: no policy violation | Google decided the review stays | Send your one time appeal with evidence |
| Escalated: check your email for updates | Your appeal went to a second review | Watch your inbox for the final decision |
| Review gone from your profile | Google agreed it broke a rule | Keep your notes in case a copy appears |
How to appeal when Google says no
- Open the Reviews Management Tool.
- Choose your business.
- Select the option to check reviews you reported and their appeal options.
- Select Appeal eligible reviews. You can pick up to 10 reviews in one appeal.
- Choose Submit an appeal, fill in the form and submit.
Google describes this as a one time appeal. Make it count. Lead with the rule, then the proof.
| Weak appeal | Strong appeal |
|---|---|
| This review is fake and unfair. | No booking or sale under this name in the 12 months before the review. Matches Google rules on fake engagement. |
| Please remove it, it hurts our business. | The same account left the same text on 3 rival businesses on the same day. Links attached. |
| We never met this person. | The reviewer profile shows they work at a competitor 2 doors down. Screenshot attached. |
Useful evidence includes booking and sales records, the staff rota for the date named, screenshots of the reviewer profile, matching reviews on other businesses and any messages that ask for money to remove the review.
Google review dispute appeal: every click
When you dispute a Google review, the appeal is your last step inside Google. Here is the exact path from Google’s Business Profile help page, button by button, so nothing trips you up on your one chance.
- Open the Reviews Management Tool.
- If the email shown is the one linked to your Business Profile, select Confirm. If not, select Switch account.
- Select your business.
- Select Continue, then Check the status of a review I reported previously and appeal options, then Continue.
- At the bottom, select Appeal eligible reviews.
- Select the review you want to appeal. You can select up to 10.
- Select Continue, then Submit an appeal.
- A form opens in a new tab. Fill it in and select Submit.
Which reviews can you appeal?
Google offers the one time appeal for a flagged review it found did not qualify for removal. That is the review showing Report reviewed (no policy violation) in the Reviews Management Tool.
If the review was reported from Google Maps
Not every attempt to dispute a Google review starts in the Reviews Management Tool. If you, a member of staff or a customer reported the review from Google Maps, it shows in the Reports section of the Google Maps app instead. The statuses there are different.
| Maps report status | What Google says it means |
|---|---|
| Processing report | Google has received the report. |
| Content removed | The reported content is gone from Maps. |
| Content not removed | Google did not have enough information to support removal, or the reporting account is restricted. |
| Content restored | The content was reinstated because Google found new information that supports it. |
| Report Canceled | The content or place was edited or removed, so the report was cancelled. |
Google says you may be eligible to submit one appeal when content is not removed. It adds that more resolution options may be available.
What to write in a Google review dispute appeal
Google does not publish the fields on its appeal form. Its help page only says to fill in the form that opens in a new tab. So when you dispute a Google review, go in with a short, factual note ready to paste. A strong one covers five things.
- The rule. Name the Google policy the review breaks, using Google’s own category name, such as Fake engagement or Personal information.
- The fact. One or two sentences on why the review breaks that rule.
- The proof. What your records show, in plain words, plus a link to the review and to any matching reviews.
- The tone. Calm and short. Leave out how the review makes you feel.
- Privacy. Describe your records. Do not paste other customers’ personal details into the form.
Templates to dispute a Google review (examples to adapt)
These templates are examples to adapt. They are not Google’s wording and no wording can promise a removal. Use only the parts that are true for your case.
Example 1: no record of the reviewer (Fake engagement)
I am appealing the decision on the review by [reviewer name] on the Business Profile for [business name]. I believe it breaks Google’s Fake engagement policy because it is not based on a real experience. We searched our bookings, orders and payments for this name and for every detail in the review. We found no match. The review also describes [a service we do not offer]. Review link: [link].
Example 2: a former employee or a competitor (Rating manipulation)
I am appealing the decision on the review by [reviewer name]. I believe it breaks Google’s Rating manipulation policy because the reviewer has a conflict of interest. The reviewer is [a former employee / the owner of a competing business at address]. [Public profile link that shows this.] Review link: [link].
Example 3: a staff member’s private details (Personal information)
I am appealing the decision on the review by [reviewer name]. It shares the [home address or private phone number] of a member of our staff without their consent. I believe this breaks Google’s Personal information policy. Review link: [link].
Example 4: not about a visit (Off topic)
I am appealing the decision on the review by [reviewer name]. It is about [another business or a political issue], not an experience at our location. I believe this breaks Google’s Off topic policy. Review link: [link].
What happens after the one appeal
Google emails you the result. Reviews that break policy are removed. Reviews that comply stay live and keep the Escalated status. Google describes the appeal as a one time step, so there is no second appeal in the Reviews Management Tool. If you still want to dispute a Google review after that, these routes remain.
| Route | When it fits | What Google says |
|---|---|---|
| Public reply | Any review that stays up. | Replying to reviews needs a verified Business Profile. |
| Legal request | You believe the review is unlawful, for example defamatory under your local law. | Try flagging it in the product first. Then give the exact URL and explain why it is unlawful. Google confirms by email with a reference number and may ask you questions. |
| EU out of court dispute settlement | You are covered by the EU Digital Services Act and Google did not remove content you reported. | The European Commission lists the certified bodies. Google suggests its own appeal first and says it is not bound by their decisions. |
| Extortion report | Someone demands money, goods or services in exchange for removing negative reviews. | Use the merchant extortion report form. Do not pay or engage. |

How long a Google review dispute takes
| Stage | Typical wait |
|---|---|
| First decision on a report | Several days, says Google |
| Appeal | Often longer than the first decision |
| Final email after escalation | No fixed time published |
Plan for a few weeks from first report to final answer on a hard case. Reply to the review in public while you wait.
What to do if the appeal fails
- Reply in public. Keep it calm and short. Our guide on how to respond to a negative Google review has templates.
- Get more real reviews. Ask happy customers. Never pay or offer rewards for reviews.
- Check the legal route. A false statement of fact that harms you may be defamation. See defamation removal.
- Get a second opinion. A fresh read often finds a rule you missed.
A worked example
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case. Timing varies.
A dental clinic gets 4 one star reviews in 2 days. The accounts have no other activity. All 4 use almost the same words.
| Step | Day | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Reports all 4 as spam | Day 1 | Decision pending |
| Checks the Reviews Management Tool | Day 5 | 2 removed, 2 marked no policy violation |
| Appeals the 2 with booking records and screenshots | Day 6 | Escalated |
| Final decision by email | Day 12 | 1 more removed, 1 stays |
The clinic replies to the last review in public and moves on. 3 of 4 gone is a good result for a spam wave.
Disputes by type of business
The rules are the same for everyone. The evidence is not. A restaurant can show its booking system. A law firm can show its client list without naming anyone. A contractor can show job records and addresses served. See our pages for dentists and doctors, law firms, restaurants and hotels and contractors.
Mistakes that sink a Google review dispute
- Reporting a review because you dislike it. Google says not to.
- Reporting the same review again and again. It does not speed anything up.
- Picking a vague reason. Match the exact rule.
- Arguing with the reviewer in public. Future customers read it.
- Offering a refund or gift for deleting a review. It can break platform rules and backfire.
- Paying anyone upfront who promises a removal. Nobody controls Google decisions.
Country notes
| Where you are | What helps |
|---|---|
| United States | The FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews. That supports a dispute when you can show a review is fake. |
| European Union | Under the Digital Services Act you can report illegal content and the platform must give you its decision and the reason. |
| United Kingdom | Fake reviews are banned under consumer law in force since April 2025. |
| Canada and Australia | Competition law treats fake reviews as misleading. Keep evidence in case you need to report to the regulator. |
