A client you have never met calls you a thief on Google. Your compliance officer asks you not to reply. What now? Review removal for financial advisors is possible when a review breaks the platform’s rules. Removal Lab builds that case in a way that sits comfortably with your compliance duties.
The check is free and stays confidential, which matters in a regulated firm. A specialist replies within one business day. Qualifying cases carry no upfront fee. You pay only if the review comes down.
Why review removal for financial advisors is harder than most
Most businesses can answer a bad review with the facts. An adviser usually cannot. Client confidentiality stops you from saying the reviewer was never a client, or what their portfolio did. Then there are the marketing rules. How you treat reviews can turn them into your own advertising in the eyes of a regulator.
So review removal for financial advisors has two tests. Does the review break the platform’s rules? And is the way you deal with it consistent with your regulatory obligations? We help with the first. Your compliance officer owns the second. This page is general information, not legal or compliance advice.
What the SEC and FINRA have said about third party content
These are the US rules that shape review removal for financial advisors. We opened each official source before writing this. Here is what they say, in plain words.
| Source | What it says | What it means for reviews |
|---|---|---|
| SEC marketing rule adopting release (2020) | An adviser adopts third party content when it endorses or approves it. An adviser can become entangled when it involves itself in preparing that content. | Do not write, edit or shape reviews about your firm. |
| Same release, on comments on an adviser’s own pages | Allowing comments does not by itself make them the adviser’s. Deleting or suppressing negative comments, or pushing positive ones to the top, would make them attributable. Removing only negative comments is not an acceptable policy. | Never hide criticism because it is critical. Neutral rules applied to everyone, such as removing profanity, are treated differently. |
| SEC small business compliance guide | Testimonials and endorsements in advertisements need clear disclosures, including whether the person is a client and whether they were paid. Third party ratings need disclosures too. The compliance date was 4 November 2022. | Check with compliance before you quote a review in marketing. |
| FINRA Regulatory Notice 17 18 (April 2017) | Third party posts are generally not firm communications. They can become so through entanglement or adoption. Liking or sharing a favourable comment counts as adoption. | Do not like or share glowing reviews without a compliance check. |
The SEC rules apply to registered investment advisers. FINRA rules apply to broker dealers and their registered people. Many financial advisors are both. Neither source tells you how reporting a fake review to Google is treated. The safest approach is simple: report only on neutral grounds the platform itself publishes, keep a written record of why and let compliance see it.
The rule we follow for every adviser case
We only report a review when it breaks a published platform rule, such as a fake experience or a conflict of interest. We never report a review because it is negative. That keeps review removal for financial advisors on neutral, documented ground.
Which review platforms matter for advisers
Review removal for financial advisors usually involves three sites. Here is what each publishes.
| Platform | Rules that matter | How a business reports |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Bans fake engagement, content based on a conflict of interest (which can include current or former employment), posts on a competitor’s place made to harm it, personal information and unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing. | Report icon next to the review, or the Reviews Management Tool. One appeal if Google finds no violation. |
| Yelp | Its terms bar fake or defamatory reviews, paying anyone to post or remove a review and threats or harassment. | From the Reviews page of the business account, per the FTC reporting guide. |
| Trustpilot | Businesses can flag reviews for set reasons, but not liking a review is not one. If you do not recognise a reviewer, you can ask Trustpilot to try to verify their experience. | Flag through the Service Reviews section of your business account. |
Which adviser reviews can be removed
These are the patterns where review removal for financial advisors has a real chance.
A person who was never a client
Your CRM has no household by that name and no account was ever opened. Google treats content that does not reflect a genuine experience as fake engagement. It is the strongest ground in review removal for financial advisors.
The wrong firm
Financial firm names sound alike. A review meant for a firm with a similar name in the next town describes meetings and products you never offered.
A departing adviser or a rival firm
An associate leaves for a competitor and a run of one star reviews follows. Google counts former employment among possible conflicts of interest and bans posting on a competitor’s place to undermine it.
Another client’s details
A reviewer names another client or posts account details that are not their own. Google bans sharing personal information without consent.
An accusation of a crime with nothing behind it
Google’s offensive content policy covers unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing. “Fraudster” with no facts is different from “they charged me a fee I did not expect”.
What platforms will not remove
A client unhappy with returns in a falling market, with your fees or with how often you called has a real experience. Those reviews stay. Under the SEC position above, trying to bury them would also be the wrong move. Review removal for financial advisors only works on reviews that break written rules. Our page on what we cannot remove is frank about the rest.
What evidence advisers usually hold
Good review removal for financial advisors relies on records you already keep. You check them. We never ask for client files.
| Record | What you check | What you tell us |
|---|---|---|
| CRM and client list | Search the name, email and phone | No client or prospect by that name |
| Account opening records | Search the household | No account was ever opened |
| Meeting notes and calendar | The dates in the review | No meeting on those dates |
| Staff records | Exit dates and new employers | The reviewer is linked to a former colleague |
| Complaint log | Any complaint from this person | Whether the review matches a real complaint |
If a review matches a real client with a real complaint, that complaint goes through your normal process. It is not a removal case. Being honest about that is part of review removal for financial advisors done properly.
How to report an adviser review on Google yourself
This is the usual first step in review removal for financial advisors. Google’s Reviews Management Tool keeps a record of each report, which suits a compliance file.
- Open the Reviews Management Tool.
- Select Confirm if the email shown is linked to your profile, or Switch account if not.
- Select your business.
- Select Continue, then Report a new review for removal, then Continue.
- Select Report next to the review, choose the reason that fits the facts and select Submit.
The same tool shows each report’s status and offers a one time appeal if Google finds no violation. Google’s own estimate for evaluation is several days. Our guide on how to remove a Google review has the detail. Save a copy of each report for your compliance file.
A worked example: three reviews after an associate leaves
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
A two adviser practice loses an associate to a rival firm. Within a week, three one star Google reviews appear. They call the firm “a scam” and mention no meetings, dates or products. None of the names match a client or prospect. One reviewer’s public profile lists the rival firm as their employer.
- The principal saves dated screenshots and checks the CRM and calendar.
- Compliance confirms the plan: report on neutral grounds only and post no reply that mentions any client.
- Each review is reported, citing conflict of interest and content that does not reflect a genuine experience.
- The firm records the reports and reasons in its compliance file.
- Nobody likes or shares the firm’s positive reviews in response.
Google makes the decision. This is what careful review removal for financial advisors looks like: no pressure, no rebuttal reviews and a paper trail.
What to do if the platform says no
When review removal for financial advisors does not work first time on Google, use the one appeal with clear facts. On Trustpilot, ask it to verify the reviewer’s experience. If a review is false and seriously damaging, speak to a lawyer about the defamation route. A short, careful reply approved by compliance can still help. See how to respond to a negative Google review for tone.
How long it takes
Review removal for financial advisors moves at the platform’s pace. Google puts a typical evaluation at several days. Trustpilot says a flagged review might be hidden while it is checked. Neither publishes a fixed timeline for every case, so neither do we.

Frequently asked questions
Can a financial advisor remove a bad Google review?
Only Google can remove a review. An adviser can report a review that breaks Google’s rules, such as a fake experience or a conflict of interest. Google then decides.
Does the SEC let advisers delete negative reviews?
The SEC has said that deleting or suppressing negative comments, or pushing positive ones forward, would make those comments attributable to the adviser. Neutral rules applied to all comments, such as removing profanity, are treated differently.
Is liking a positive review a problem?
FINRA Regulatory Notice 17 18 says liking or sharing a favourable third party comment counts as adopting it. Check with compliance first.
Which adviser reviews qualify for removal?
Reviews from people who were never clients, reviews meant for another firm, reviews linked to a former colleague or rival and reviews with another person’s private details. Honest criticism of returns or fees stays.
Is review removal for financial advisors confidential?
Yes. The case review is confidential and we never ask for client files. You check your records and tell us what you found.
Does review removal for financial advisors work outside the US?
We work with advisers in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland. The SEC and FINRA material on this page covers the US only, so advisers elsewhere should check their own regulator’s rules.
Do I pay if the review stays?
No. On a qualifying case nothing is paid upfront. The fee applies only once the review is removed.
