Reported a fake review on Friday and still staring at it on Monday? If you are asking how long does Google take to remove a review, Google’s own answer is short: review evaluation typically takes several days. Removal Lab built this guide from Google’s help pages only, so you will find no invented timelines here. Just what Google says, what each status means and what slows a case down.
That one sentence is the only timing Google publishes on its review removal page. Everything else about how long does Google take to remove a review depends on what happens after the first decision.
The quick version
- Report the review from your Business Profile or the Reviews Management Tool, choosing the reason that matches the policy it breaks.
- Expect the first evaluation to take several days, which is the only timeframe Google gives.
- Check the status in the Reviews Management Tool: Decision pending, Report reviewed (no policy violation) or Escalated.
- If Google finds no violation and you disagree, send the one time appeal.
- Watch your email for the final decision on an escalated appeal.
What Google actually says about timing
On its Business Profile help page about reporting reviews, Google says: “Review evaluation typically takes several days.” It adds that you can check your report’s status in the Reviews Management Tool. It gives no other timeframe for the first decision, for appeals or for escalations.
So the honest answer to how long does Google take to remove a review has two parts. The first evaluation usually takes several days. Anything after that, such as an appeal, has no published clock.
| Stage | Does Google publish a timeframe? | What Google says |
|---|---|---|
| First evaluation of a reported review | Yes | Review evaluation typically takes several days |
| Appeal after no policy violation | No | You can submit a one time appeal |
| Escalated appeal | No | You will receive an email with the final decision |
| Legal removal request | No | Google tries to respond to valid notices as soon as it can |
| Removal showing on Maps and Search | No set time | Reviews that break policy stop appearing on Maps and Search |
How long does Google take to remove a review at each status?
The status is your best guide to how long does Google take to remove a review. Google’s Reviews Management Tool shows one of three statuses. Each one tells you where you are in the process.
| Status | What Google says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Decision pending | The review was flagged but not yet evaluated. | Wait. Google says evaluation typically takes several days. |
| Report reviewed (no policy violation) | Google evaluated it and found no violation. | Decide whether to use your one time appeal. |
| Escalated (check your email for updates) | Your appeal was escalated. | Watch your inbox for the final decision. |
If an appeal succeeds, Google says the review is removed. For that review, the question of how long does Google take to remove a review is then answered. If the review complies with policy, it stays live and the status changes to Escalated. In both cases Google sends an email.

What slows a case down
Google does not publish reasons for delays. But its help pages make clear which situations add stages. Every extra stage adds to how long does Google take to remove a review in your case.
- The review does not break a policy. This shapes how long does Google take to remove a review in your case. Google removes only reviews that violate its policies. It says not to report a review just because you disagree with it. It also does not get involved in disputes between businesses and customers. A report like this ends at no policy violation and moves you into the appeal stage.
- The reason does not match the problem. Google’s Maps content policy has named categories, from fake engagement and conflict of interest to harassment and personal information. Our guide to Google review policy violations sets them out. A report filed under the wrong reason gives Google’s team less to go on.
- An appeal is needed. An appeal changes how long does Google take to remove a review, because it is a second stage with no published timeframe. Google describes it as one time.
- The case is a legal one. Defamation and other legal issues go through Google Legal Help, not the review report. Google says it may email you for clarification and tries to respond to valid notices as soon as it can. See our guide to a Google legal removal request.
- It is part of an extortion scam. Google says Business Profile extortion scams involving negative reviews have a separate reporting process.
- It is a third party review. Google notes that reviews from other sources can appear on Business Profiles and follow a separate process.
What if it does not work
- Read the status, not the clock. When people ask how long does Google take to remove a review, the status usually answers it. Report reviewed (no policy violation) is a decision, not a delay. Waiting longer will not change it.
- Use the appeal well. You only get one. Pick the clearest policy and include every review that fits, up to 10.
- Check for a legal ground. If the review contains false statements of fact that harm your business, a legal request may apply even when the policy route failed.
- Reply publicly. While you wait, a calm reply shows customers your side. Our guide on how to respond to a negative Google review has examples.
- Do not pay for shortcuts. Our guide on paying to remove Google reviews explains why offers to make reviews vanish are a risk.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reporting the same review again and again while it shows Decision pending. Google’s page describes one report and one status.
- Guessing how long does Google take to remove a review from forum posts. Google’s only stated figure is several days for evaluation.
- Spending your one time appeal on a review with no clear policy breach.
- Choosing a reason because it sounds serious rather than because it fits.
- Assuming a legal request changes how long does Google take to remove a review for the better. Google publishes no timeframe for those either.
- Arguing with the reviewer in public while you wait.
A worked example
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
A dental practice noticed three reviews posted within an hour, each one star, each from a new account, each with almost the same wording. One account’s profile showed it also reviewed a rival practice nearby with five stars.
The practice manager opened the Reviews Management Tool, confirmed the account, selected the practice and chose Report a new review for removal. She reported each review, choosing the reason closest to Google’s fake engagement policy. The status showed Decision pending. Several days later two reviews were gone and one showed Report reviewed (no policy violation). She used the one time appeal on that review, pointing to the matching wording. The status changed to Escalated. She then watched her email for the final decision. Our guide on fake Google reviews from a competitor covers this pattern.
