YouTube video removal with Removal Lab

Written by the Removal Lab team.

Someone has uploaded a video of you, put your name in the title and the comments get worse every day? YouTube video removal works through three main routes (privacy, harassment or a legal complaint) and Removal Lab can tell you for free which one fits.

YouTube makes every decision. Our job is to match the video to the right YouTube policy, prepare the complaint the way YouTube asks for it and follow it through. The check is confidential. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment. If the video is lawful commentary that YouTube is likely to keep, we will tell you before you spend any time on it.

How YouTube video removal works

YouTube keeps its routes separate. Picking the wrong one can stall a good YouTube video removal case. Here is how they differ, using YouTube’s own help pages.

RouteWhen it fitsWho can fileWhat YouTube says it weighs
Privacy complaintYou are uniquely identifiable by your image or voice, full name, financial details, contact details or other personal informationYou or your legal representative. For someone who has died, the closest family members or legal representativesPublic interest, newsworthiness and consent
Harassment reportThe video insults, threatens, stalks, doxxes or targets an identifiable personAnyone, through the Report optionThe Harassment and cyberbullying policies and their exceptions
Legal complaintDefamation, trademark or another legal issueThe affected party or an authorised legal representativeLocal legal considerations. Sometimes a court order is required
Intimate images (US)Intimate images shared without consentThrough the dedicated webformYouTube says it will review and remove confirmed content within 48 hours of the webform submission under the TAKE IT DOWN Act

Ask the uploader first, unless it is unsafe

YouTube’s privacy guidance says to ask the uploader to remove the content first. If you cannot reach an agreement, or you are uncomfortable contacting them, file a privacy complaint. Its defamation page also encourages contacting the uploader. If you feel you are in physical danger, YouTube says to contact your local authorities instead.

Which YouTube videos can be removed for privacy

For YouTube video removal, the privacy route is often the strongest tool a private person has. YouTube asks first whether you are uniquely identifiable in the content. It lists image or voice, full name, financial information, contact information and other personally identifiable information. A blurry figure in the background is not the same as a close up with your name in the caption.

YouTube then weighs public interest, newsworthiness and consent. It also considers whether a video shows a person’s moment of death or critical injury. For altered or synthetic content, YouTube looks at whether the content is altered or synthetic, whether viewers are told, whether you can be identified, whether it looks realistic, whether it has parody, satire or public interest value and whether it shows a public figure in sensitive behaviour such as criminal activity or endorsing a product.

That last list is worth reading twice. A realistic AI video that puts your face or voice into something you never did can be a privacy case, not just a matter of taste. For YouTube video removal on that ground, it helps to show three things: that it is you, that it is synthetic and that viewers are not told.

When YouTube’s harassment rules apply

Some videos are less about privacy and more about attack. For those, YouTube video removal runs through the Harassment and cyberbullying policies. They cover videos, descriptions, comments, live streams and external links. YouTube does not allow, among other things:

YouTube also lists exceptions. Content may stay up if its main purpose is educational, documentary, scientific or artistic. Debate about high profile officials or leaders may be allowed. So may scripted satire. YouTube says these exceptions do not permit harassment.

On enforcement, YouTube says it removes violating content and emails the creator. A first violation typically brings a warning. Three strikes within 90 days may lead to channel termination. A single case of severe abuse can end a channel outright. For a pattern across many uploads, YouTube points people to the option to report the whole channel.

How to report a video on YouTube yourself

These YouTube video removal steps come from YouTube’s own help page for the Android app. The wording on other devices may differ slightly.

  1. Open the YouTube app and go to the video.
  2. Under the video, tap More, then Report.
  3. Select the reason that best fits.
  4. Tap Report.
  5. For a comment, tap More on the comment, then Report, choose a reason and tap Report. Creators can also tick "Hide user on my channel".
  6. For a legal issue, go to the content or channel, tap More, then Report, choose Legal issue and select the issue.

YouTube says reported content is not automatically taken down. It is reviewed first. YouTube says it reviews reported videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Reporting is anonymous, so other users cannot tell who made the report. You can check progress in your Report history.

A privacy complaint is a separate process from the Report button. You reach it through YouTube’s Privacy Complaint Process pages, which walk you through a series of questions first. Use that route when the core problem is that the video identifies you.

YouTube video removal for defamation

Defamation is where people expect most and YouTube offers least. For the United States, YouTube says it does not remove video postings due to allegations of defamation, because it is not in a position to judge whether postings are true. Citing Section 230(c) of the Communications Decency Act, it recommends pursuing claims against the person who posted the content. It adds that if you take the creator to court, YouTube may be prepared to comply with an order requiring the creator to remove the posting.

Outside the US, YouTube says it takes local legal considerations into account and in some cases requires a court order. Its defamation complaint form asks for the country of the dispute, your full legal name, whether you act for yourself or a client, contact details, the video URL and the exact statements you say are defamatory. General references like "the whole video" are not accepted. You must include the declaration "I declare that the information in this notice is true and complete" and sign with your full legal name.

One detail catches people out. YouTube says the uploader will be notified of a defamation complaint. If you do not want your legal name and email disclosed to them, say so in the complaint. Our defamation removal service covers how a court order fits into this.

What evidence helps YouTube video removal

RouteEvidence that helps
PrivacyTimestamps where your face, voice, name or contact details appear. A note on why you did not consent
Synthetic or AI videoThe timestamps of altered content and proof of where your real image or voice came from
HarassmentA list of videos, comments and dates showing the pattern, plus any threats
DefamationEach exact statement, its timestamp and why it is false and damaging
Court orderA copy of the order. YouTube says to attach it in reply to the autoreply you receive after filing

Precision wins here. YouTube video removal requests that point to the exact second and the exact words are far easier to act on than a link and a paragraph of anger.

What YouTube will not remove

YouTube keeps a lot. Criticism of public figures, news reporting and documentary work often stay. Strong opinions about a business or a person are usually allowed if they do not cross into harassment. YouTube video removal also will not happen because a video is embarrassing or old, unless one of the policies above applies.

YouTube also warns that abuse of its legal forms may result in the termination of your YouTube account. Filing a legal complaint about content you simply dislike is a bad idea. Our page on what we cannot remove explains where the line usually falls.

How long YouTube video removal takes

YouTube publishes very little about timing. It says it reviews reported videos around the clock. For confirmed intimate images reported through the US webform, it says removal happens within 48 hours of submission. For privacy complaints and defamation complaints it does not publish a timeline, so neither do we. Anyone who promises a fixed YouTube video removal date is guessing.

What to do if YouTube says no

If YouTube video removal fails on the first try, these steps still help.

If the video exposes your address or phone number, read our doxxing removal page as well. For wider damage to your name, see personal reputation removal.

YouTube video removal in the US, UK, Canada and beyond

YouTube’s legal forms start by asking for your country or region, because the rules change with it. For US disputes, YouTube says YouTube.com is governed by US law and points to Section 230. Court orders about content on youtube.com can be mailed to YouTube, Inc., Attn Legal Support, 901 Cherry Ave., Second Floor, San Bruno, CA 94066.

For the UK, Canada, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland, the general rule applies: YouTube says it takes local legal considerations into account. In practice that means the strength of a YouTube video removal request for defamation depends on local law and often on whether a court has already ruled. The privacy and harassment side of YouTube video removal rests on YouTube’s own policies rather than on local law.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a YouTube video removed if it shows me without consent?

You can file a privacy complaint if you are uniquely identifiable in the video. YouTube weighs public interest, newsworthiness and consent before it decides.

Does YouTube remove videos for defamation?

For US disputes, YouTube says it does not remove videos over allegations of defamation because it cannot judge whether they are true. It may comply with a court order requiring the creator to remove the video.

Will the uploader know I reported their video?

YouTube says standard reports are anonymous. A defamation complaint is shared with the uploader, so say in the complaint if you do not want your legal name and email disclosed.

How long does YouTube video removal take?

YouTube does not publish a timeline for privacy or defamation complaints. For confirmed intimate images reported through its US webform, it says it removes them within 48 hours.

What happens to a channel that harasses someone?

YouTube removes violating content and a first violation usually brings a warning. Three strikes within 90 days may lead to channel termination.

What does YouTube video removal cost with Removal Lab?

The check is free and confidential. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment and you pay only when YouTube removes the video. See pricing.
