Opened your laptop in Parramatta to find a one star review from someone your agency has never dealt with? Review removal Sydney businesses can trust starts with the platform’s own rules: Removal Lab checks the review for free and, when it breaks those rules, files the report with the evidence attached.
Honest reviews stay up, even the sharp ones. Fake reviews, reviews from rivals or former staff, reviews that expose someone’s personal details and reviews that accuse you of a crime with nothing behind them can be reported. A specialist replies within one business day. There is no upfront payment on qualifying cases.
Removal Lab has no office in Sydney. Our offices are in Toronto at 100 King St W and in New York at 122 E 42nd St. We serve Sydney remotely by email, WhatsApp and phone. The national rules are on our review removal Australia page, so we do not repeat them here. This page covers what is specific to review removal Sydney work: the sites we check first, the New South Wales defamation rules written for online platforms, the privacy trap in replies and how we work across the time difference.
Review removal Sydney in one minute
Google and ProductReview.com.au are the first two sites we check in any review removal Sydney case. The platform decides every case on its own published rules. NSW defamation law now gives review sites and other digital intermediaries a defence if they offer a complaints channel and act within 7 days of a written complaint, which changes how a legal complaint should be written. We only report reviews that are fake or break the rules.
Google review removal Sydney: the sites we check first
A Surry Hills restaurant, a Parramatta real estate agency and a Northern Beaches builder are not judged on the same review sites. So every review removal Sydney case starts by matching the review to the rule that the site actually publishes.
| Site | What its rules say | How to report | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bans posting on a competitor’s listing to undermine it, content based on a conflict of interest (including current or former employment) and unsubstantiated allegations of criminal wrongdoing | Read reviews, then the Report icon, pick a reason and Send report. Track it and appeal in the Reviews Management Tool, up to 10 reviews at once | Google says it does not get involved in conflict between businesses and customers | |
| ProductReview.com.au | No personal attacks, no personal details such as full names or phone numbers, no reviews from people affiliated with the listing now or in the past, including staff, family and friends | The flag icon under the post, with detailed and factual evidence | A username that does not match your customer records is not enough evidence on its own |
| TrueLocal | The terms of use linked from TrueLocal ban content that is false or misleading, abusive, harassing, defamatory or invasive of privacy. Separate True Local Review Guidelines apply to reviews | The terms describe no reporting steps. Contact TrueLocal directly | The operator says it may review content but is not obliged to |
Google review removal Sydney: how the report works
Google’s reporting steps are short and the same for every review removal Sydney case. Open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, select the Report icon next to the review, choose a reason and select Send report. The Reviews Management Tool then shows whether a decision is pending, whether Google found no violation or whether the case was escalated by email. Google says review evaluation typically takes several days. If it finds no violation, there is a one time appeal. You can select up to 10 reviews in one appeal.
Most Google review removal Sydney cases turn on picking the right policy. A review from a former employee is a conflict of interest. A review posted to hurt a competitor is fake engagement. A review calling your director a thief with no detail is an unsubstantiated allegation of criminal wrongdoing. Our Google review removal service page shows how we build those reports. Our guide on how long Google takes to remove a review covers the wait.
ProductReview.com.au: evidence over opinion
ProductReview.com.au is an Australian review site with its own posting guidelines. To report a post, you click the flag icon under it. It asks for detailed, factual reports. It says more evidence makes a decision easier. It may check that a reviewer used the product or service. Some reviewers may be asked for proof of purchase.
Two of its rules matter a lot for review removal Sydney cases. People affiliated with a listing, now or in the past, should not review it. That covers former staff and their family and friends. And reviews should not carry personal details such as full names, phone numbers or email addresses. Incentives are allowed only when they are offered to likely critics as well as likely fans and are clearly disclosed.
ProductReview also watches how businesses use the flag. It says it may put a notice on a listing if it believes removal requests are being used to suppress genuine reviews. That is why we never flag a review just because it hurts.
NSW defamation law for review sites and other platforms
Defamation is a state law in Australia. In Sydney the Defamation Act 2005 (NSW) applies. It now has rules written for the platforms that carry other people’s posts. The Act calls them digital intermediaries. A review site hosting a customer’s review is the kind of service these rules were written for, which makes them central to review removal Sydney cases that reach a lawyer.
Here are the sections that change how review removal Sydney cases are handled when the legal route is on the table.
| Section | What the NSW Act says | What it means for a Sydney business |
|---|---|---|
| 10A | Serious harm to reputation is an element of the claim. A judge decides it, not a jury. It can be decided early, before the trial | One harsh review rarely clears this bar. For a company that can sue, harm must mean serious financial loss |
| 12A and 12B | A concerns notice must be in writing, give the webpage address, set out the imputations and the serious harm. No claim can start until it is given and the offer period has passed | The first legal step is a letter, not a court filing |
| 31A | A defence for a digital intermediary that has an accessible complaints mechanism and takes reasonable access prevention steps within 7 days after a written complaint | A clear written complaint to the platform matters. The platform has a reason to act within a week |
| 10C and 10D | Exemptions for caching, conduit and storage services and for search engine providers in set circumstances | A complaint usually belongs with the site hosting the review, not the search engine listing it |
| 23A | Before ordering preliminary discovery about who posted digital matter, the court must weigh privacy, safety and other public interest considerations | Unmasking an anonymous reviewer is a job for a court. Removal Lab never tries to identify reviewers |
| 39A | The court can order a digital intermediary that is not a party to take access prevention steps | After a win in court, a platform that was never sued can still be ordered to act |
| 27 | Matter published to a police official acting in an official capacity is covered by absolute privilege | Reporting threats or extortion to police is protected |
The Act defines an accessible complaints mechanism as an easily accessible address, location or other mechanism the plaintiff can use to complain. For most review sites, that is the report form or a published contact address.
Most Sydney companies cannot sue at all. Section 9 limits claims to excluded corporations: not for profit bodies, or companies with fewer than 10 employees that are not an associated entity of another corporation. Removal Lab is not a law firm. In review removal Sydney work the legal route comes after the platform route. Our defamation removal page explains when it is worth paying a solicitor.
Fake review removal Sydney: what the ACCC expects
For review removal Sydney clients, the ACCC small business toolkit is blunt. Writing fake or misleading reviews is against the law, even as a favour to friends or family. If you see a fake review, it says to notify the review platform immediately and ask for it to be removed. You can also respond to the review in a professional way. Businesses should not selectively edit or remove genuine reviews. And businesses and platforms that leave up reviews they know are fake risk breaching the Australian Consumer Law.
The ACCC’s case against Meriton Property Services shows where the line sits. Meriton offered serviced apartments across at least 13 properties in NSW and Queensland. The ACCC said it stopped TripAdvisor review emails reaching guests who might leave a negative review, either by inserting extra letters into their email addresses or by not passing the addresses on. The Federal Court ordered Meriton to pay $3 million in penalties.
The lesson for fake review removal Sydney work is simple. Reporting a fake review is what the regulator tells you to do. Stopping unhappy customers from reviewing, or quietly hiding genuine reviews, is the conduct it punishes. Our fake review removal page explains the evidence platforms look for.
The reply that turns a review into a privacy problem
When a review stings, the urge is to set the record straight with everything you know about the customer. Do not. The OAIC described a case where a real estate agency answered a Google review by disclosing the reviewer’s full name, occupation and financial circumstances. It looked at this under Australian Privacy Principle 6, which governs the use and disclosure of personal information. The agency admitted it could have answered the review without identifying him or revealing his personal information.
The same rule cuts the other way. When a review exposes your staff, Google bans posting personal information without consent and ProductReview bans full names, phone numbers and email addresses in posts. That makes a review naming your junior property manager a strong review removal Sydney case, while a reply naming the reviewer is a risk. Our guide to responding to a negative Google review shows safe wording. Our page on review removal for real estate agents covers agency cases in depth.
Time zones and timing for review removal Sydney clients
New South Wales observes daylight saving. Clocks go forward on the first Sunday in October and back on the first Sunday in April. Sydney keeps the same clock as Melbourne. The Victorian Government notes that Melbourne’s morning overlaps with the end of the US working day. In practice, a link you send from Sydney at breakfast can reach our New York team before they finish for the day.
We do not quote an exact hour gap, because it moves when either side changes its clocks. Most review removal Sydney cases need no call at all. Send the links and screenshots in one message and a specialist replies within one business day. Here is what each route says about timing.
| Route | What the source says about timing | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Review evaluation typically takes several days. One time appeal, up to 10 reviews at once | Report everything that qualifies together, then appeal together | |
| NSW Act section 31A | Reasonable access prevention steps within 7 days after a written complaint | A week is the window a platform has to keep the defence |
| ProductReview.com.au | Its guidelines set no time frames for reports or decisions | Send strong evidence the first time |
| Removal Lab | Reply within one business day | Send every link in one message to save a round trip |
A worked example: a Parramatta real estate agency
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
Here is how a review removal Sydney case can play out. A real estate agency in Parramatta finds three new reviews in one week. The first is a Google review posted under a nickname by a property manager who left the agency on bad terms. It calls the director a thief and gives no detail. The second is a ProductReview.com.au review from a tenant that names a junior property manager in full and lists her mobile number. The third is a Google review from a landlord unhappy about management fees.
| Review | Rule it may break | What the agency sends | Likely route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google review from the former employee | Google conflict of interest (current or former employment) and unsubstantiated allegations of criminal wrongdoing | The exact words, plus a short note on the connection. No staff files | Report, then the one time appeal if needed |
| ProductReview review naming staff | ProductReview ban on personal details such as full names and phone numbers | A flag with the details quoted | Flag icon under the post |
| Google review about fees | None. It is a genuine opinion from a real client | A calm public reply with no personal details | Stays up |
Removal Lab files the two reports and keeps Google’s one time appeal in reserve. The director replies to the fees review in general terms, without mentioning the landlord’s finances, which is exactly the trap the OAIC case shows. If the former employee’s review stays up and the director wants to go further, a solicitor’s written complaint to Google starts the 7 day window in section 31A. If a platform agrees a rule was broken and removes the review, the agency pays then. If not, it owes nothing. That is review removal Sydney work done honestly.
Which Sydney reviews stay up
- Harsh but genuine reviews. The ACCC says businesses should not selectively edit or remove genuine reviews.
- Disputes about what happened. Google says it does not get involved in conflict between businesses and customers.
- Reviews that only fail a customer database match. ProductReview says a username that does not match your records is not enough evidence on its own.
- Reviews you could hide by blocking review requests. The Meriton penalty shows how the ACCC treats that.
People who search remove negative reviews Sydney often find offers to clean up a whole profile. That is the wrong goal under Australian law. Honest review removal Sydney advice includes telling you when to leave a review alone and answer it well. Our page on what we cannot remove lists the cases we turn down.

Frequently asked questions
Does Removal Lab have an office in Sydney?
No. Removal Lab’s offices are in Toronto at 100 King St W and New York at 122 E 42nd St. We serve Sydney businesses remotely by email, WhatsApp and phone.
Can Removal Lab get a Google review removed for a Sydney business?
Only Google can remove a Google review. Removal Lab checks the review against Google policy for free and, when it breaks a rule, builds and files the report. You pay only if it is removed.
What changed in NSW defamation law for review sites?
The NSW Defamation Act now gives a digital intermediary, such as a review site, a defence if it has an accessible complaints mechanism and takes reasonable access prevention steps within 7 days after a written complaint.
Can my Sydney company sue over a defamatory review?
Usually not. Under section 9 of the NSW Act only excluded corporations can sue, meaning not for profit bodies or companies with fewer than 10 employees that are not associated with another corporation. Even then the harm must mean serious financial loss.
Is it illegal to remove negative reviews in Australia?
The ACCC says businesses should not selectively edit or remove genuine reviews. Reporting a fake review to the platform is different. It is what the ACCC tells businesses to do.
Can I reply to a review with the customer’s details to prove my point?
No. The OAIC looked at a case where an agency disclosed a reviewer’s full name, occupation and finances in a Google reply under Australian Privacy Principle 6. Answer in general terms instead.
Does review removal Sydney cost anything upfront?
Nothing on qualifying cases. The case review is free and you pay only when the content is removed.
