Short answer
Fake review removal means reporting a review to the platform under the exact rule it breaks, with proof that the reviewer never had a real experience of your business. Google, Trustpilot and Yelp all ban fake reviews and so do the FTC rule in the US and the DMCC Act in the UK, but only the platform can take a review down. Removal Lab checks each review for free, files the report with the evidence and asks for no upfront payment on qualifying cases.

A glowing review for your competitor and a one star for you, posted by the same account on the same afternoon. Subtle. Fake review removal is the heart of what Removal Lab does. Every major platform bans reviews that are not based on a real experience. Google calls it fake engagement. Trustpilot calls it not a genuine experience. Yelp calls it no first hand experience. The rule exists everywhere. The hard part is proving it. That is where we come in. No upfront payment on qualifying cases.
Fake review removal in one minute
We look for the pattern, not just the review. Timing, reviewer history, details that do not match your business and links to competitors or former staff. Then we report each review under the exact policy it breaks, on the right platform, with the evidence attached.
Fake review removal: key facts
These are the fake review removal facts a buyer usually wants first. Each one comes from the platform or the regulator, not from us.
| Question | Key fact | Source |
|---|---|---|
| What does Google’s rule say? | Google’s fake engagement policy bans content that is not based on a real experience, reviews paid for directly or in kind, content posted from several accounts by one person and posts on a competitor’s business meant to undermine it. | Google Maps content policy |
| What does Trustpilot’s rule say? | A review must be based on a genuine experience. Fake reviews are not allowed and are removed. Anyone with a special relationship to the business, a competitor included, may not review it. | Trustpilot rules for reviewers and for businesses |
| What does US law say? | The FTC rule at 16 CFR Part 465 bans fake reviews (465.2), paying for reviews that express a set sentiment (465.4), undisclosed insider reviews (465.5) and review suppression through threats or hiding (465.7). | 16 CFR Part 465 |
| What does UK law say? | Schedule 20 paragraph 13 of the DMCC Act bans submitting or commissioning a fake review: one that claims to be, but is not, based on a genuine experience. The CMA says it can fine a company up to 10% of global turnover. | Schedule 20 and CMA |
| What evidence proves a fake? | No record of the reviewer, details that do not match your business, a sudden spike of reviews, networks of accounts that review the same businesses and links to a rival or former staff. | CMA208 para 8.19 |
| Who decides? | The platform. Google says only reviews that break its policies are eligible for removal. Removal Lab files the report and the appeal but cannot delete anything. | Google Business Profile Help |
| What does Removal Lab charge? | The check is free. There is no upfront payment on qualifying cases and you pay only when the review is removed. | Removal Lab pricing |
Signs of a fake review
| Sign | What to check |
|---|---|
| No record of the customer | No booking, order, email or visit under that name. |
| Reviewer history | New account, no photo, reviews only of businesses in your trade. |
| Wrong details | A service you do not offer or a location you do not have. |
| Timing | A cluster of reviews after a launch, a dispute or a dismissal. |
| Copied text | The same review on other profiles or platforms. |
How fake review removal works across platforms
Google: report from your Business Profile or the Reviews Management Tool, then use the one time appeal if refused. Trustpilot: flag as not a genuine experience, backed by records. Yelp: report under its content guidelines without over reporting. Glassdoor and Indeed: show the reviewer could not have worked there. Each platform has its own tone and its own tolerance. We know them.
What fake review removal should never involve
- Post fake positive reviews to bury the bad one.
- Pay or pressure anyone to delete a review.
- Report every negative review. It burns your credibility with the platform.
In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. We only work by the rules.
Fake review removal for local and online businesses
Restaurants, clinics, law firms, contractors, agencies, online stores and professionals across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the UAE. Send us the reviews and we reply within one business day.
How fake review removal works, platform by platform
The principle is the same everywhere. Show the platform that the review was not based on a real experience. The mechanics differ. Knowing them is most of the job.
| Platform | Where to report | What the platform wants to see | Appeal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Profile or the Reviews Management Tool | A policy match and a pattern. Google says evaluation usually takes several days. | One time appeal, up to 10 reviews at once | |
| Trustpilot | Business account, flag as not a genuine experience | Order records or proof of no interaction. Trustpilot may ask the reviewer for proof within three days. | Formal dispute link in the decision email |
| Yelp | Report under content guidelines | First hand experience missing, conflict of interest or wrong business. Yelp watches for over reporting. | Varies |
| Glassdoor | Flag under community guidelines | Signs the reviewer never worked there. Reviewers stay anonymous. | Varies |
| Indeed | Report company review | Same as Glassdoor. Pattern evidence matters. | Varies |
| Report the recommendation | Fake accounts, harassment or policy breach. | Limited |
We file each report in the way that platform expects. A Google report written like a Yelp report fails. The other way round fails too.
How to report a fake Google review yourself
This is the do it yourself side of fake review removal on Google. There are two routes. Both are free and both are set out in Google Business Profile Help.
From your Business Profile
- Go to your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
- Next to the review, select Report.
- Choose a reason, then select Send report.
From the Reviews Management Tool
- Open the tool, confirm the account that manages your profile and select your business.
- Select Continue, then Report a new review for removal, then Continue.
- Next to the review, select Report.
- Choose a reason in the new tab, then select Submit.
Google says review evaluation typically takes several days. The tool then shows one of three statuses: Decision pending, Report reviewed with no policy violation, or Escalated with a note to check your email. If Google finds no violation, you can send a one time appeal and select up to 10 reviews in it.
A report filed with no evidence and the wrong reason is easy for Google to turn down. That is why fake review removal starts with the evidence, not the button. If you would rather hand the whole thing over, our Google review removal service covers the report, the evidence and the appeal.
A fake review removal case, start to finish
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
A boutique fitness studio received four one star reviews in a single weekend. All four accounts were new. Two mentioned “the pool”. The studio has no pool. One used the same phrase as a review left on a rival studio the same day.
Day one: screenshots of all four with dates, reviewer names and the pool detail circled. Day two: the owner searched memberships and class bookings and found no match for any name. Day three: four reports filed, each citing fake engagement and the wrong facility details, with a note on the timing cluster. Day eight: Google removed two and left two. Day nine: the one time appeal for the remaining two, attaching the full pattern. Day sixteen: both gone. The owner paid for four removals and nothing else. That is fake review removal done properly.
Why patterns beat single reviews in fake review removal
One fake review on its own is hard to prove. Four fake reviews together are easy. Platforms respond to evidence that a reviewer could not have had the experience they describe. That evidence is almost always in the pattern: timing, account age, copied phrases, wrong details, links to rivals or former staff. Our first job on any fake review removal case is to map the pattern before a single report is filed.
Evidence that works for fake review removal
| Evidence | Why it helps | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| No customer record | Shows no genuine experience | Search bookings, invoices, emails and messages for the name |
| Timing cluster | Shows coordination | List review dates and times side by side |
| Wrong details | Shows the reviewer was never there | Note every fact in the review that does not match your business |
| Reviewer history | Shows a pattern of targeting | Open the reviewer profile and note other reviews |
| Link to a competitor or ex employee | Shows conflict of interest | Names, dates of employment, public profiles |
| Copied text | Shows a template | Search a distinctive phrase from the review |
How to prove a review is fake
Proof in fake review removal is rarely one smoking gun. It is a set of signals that each point the same way. The useful part is that platforms and regulators have already written down the signals they trust. The UK regulator lists several of them in its fake reviews guidance (CMA208), in the part that tells review sites what to look for.
| Signal | Who recognises it | What you can show |
|---|---|---|
| A spike of very positive or very negative reviews in a short time | CMA208 para 8.19(b)(iii) | A timeline of review dates next to your bookings or sales for the same days |
| Networks of reviewers who review the same products or businesses | CMA208 para 8.19(b)(iii) | Screenshots of each reviewer’s other reviews showing the same set of businesses |
| Several reviews written from the same email or IP address | CMA208 para 8.19(b)(iii) | You cannot see this data. Ask the platform to check it in your report. |
| Unusual review length or template wording | CMA208 para 8.19(b)(iii) | The reviews copied side by side with the repeated phrases marked |
| Content posted from several accounts by one person | Google fake engagement policy | Matching wording, photos or writing habits across accounts |
| No real experience of your business | Google fake engagement policy, Trustpilot genuine experience rule, DMCC paragraph 13(5) | No booking, order, invoice, call or message under that name, plus details you do not offer |
| Posted by a rival to damage you | Google fake engagement policy, Trustpilot special relationship rule | Public pages that show the reviewer works for or owns a competing business |
| A current or former employee posing as a customer | Google rating manipulation policy, which says a conflict of interest may include current or former employment | Staff records showing the dates the person worked for you, shared only with the platform |
| A demand for money after the reviews arrive | Google negative review extortion guidance | Screenshots of every demand with dates, then Google’s merchant extortion form |
One signal on its own proves little. A new account with no photo is normal for many real people. Three or four signals in one short summary are much harder for a platform to ignore. Write that summary in plain words: what the pattern is, which rule it breaks and what you attached. It is the core of every fake review removal report we file.
If dozens of reviews landed in a day or two, read our page on review bombing removal. If someone then asked for money to stop, go straight to Google review extortion and do not reply to the sender.
What to do while fake review removal is in progress
- Reply once, calmly, to each review. Say you have no record of the person and invite them to contact you.
- Do not reply twice. Do not argue. Do not name anyone.
- Ask real customers for honest reviews after good experiences, with no incentives.
- Keep the evidence folder updated. If a review is reposted later, you will be ready.
Fake review removal and the law
In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews and testimonials has been in force since late 2024. It bans fake reviews, bans buying reviews and bans suppressing honest reviews through threats or intimidation. The UK, Canada and Australia have their own rules on fake and misleading reviews. The practical point is simple. The method that works for fake review removal, policy and evidence, is also the only method that keeps you on the right side of the law.
The exact rules that ban fake reviews
Fake review removal works best when the report names the rule, not just the feeling. Here are the rules we cite most in fake review removal cases, with the section numbers so you can check them yourself.
United States: the FTC rule, 16 CFR Part 465
| Section | What it bans | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 465.2 | Writing, creating or selling a review that misrepresents that the reviewer exists, used the product or what their experience was. Buying such reviews, or getting them from your own officers, managers, staff, agents or their close relatives for third party sites, when you knew or should have known. | Never write or buy reviews to balance a fake one. Your own team must not post as customers. |
| 465.4 | Giving pay or other incentives for reviews that express a particular sentiment, positive or negative. | No discount, gift or prize tied to a good review. |
| 465.5 | Officers and managers writing reviews of their own business without clearly disclosing the link. Pushing staff or relatives to post reviews without disclosure. | Anyone connected to the business must say so in the review. |
| 465.6 | Claiming that a website or entity you control gives independent reviews of a category that includes your own products or services. | Be wary of “independent” review sites run by the firm they recommend. |
| 465.7(a) | Unfounded legal threats, physical threats, intimidation or knowingly false public accusations used to stop a review or get one removed. | Never threaten a reviewer, even one you are sure is fake. |
| 465.7(b) | Implying the reviews you show are all or most of them when you hid some for being negative. Hiding reviews you reasonably believe are fake, or that are abusive, defamatory, clearly false or unrelated, is not suppression when one rule applies to every review. | On your own website, keep fake reviews off under one written rule applied to all reviews. |
The FTC says the rule gives no private right of action, so you cannot sue a reviewer under it. Courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations. In warning letters to 10 companies, FTC staff cited civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation. The FTC also says reputation management companies are not immune from the rule.
United Kingdom: DMCC Act Schedule 20 paragraph 13 and the CMA guidance
| Provision | What it says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Para 13(1) | Bans submitting, or commissioning someone to submit or write, a fake review or a review that hides that it was incentivised. | Fake reviews are a banned practice in every circumstance. |
| Para 13(5) | Defines a fake consumer review as one that “purports to be, but is not, based on a person’s genuine experience”. | This is the test your evidence has to meet. |
| Para 13(2) | Bans publishing reviews in a misleading way. The listed examples include removing negative reviews while publishing positive ones. | Do not hide genuine criticism on your own site. |
| Para 13(3) | Publishers of reviews must take reasonable and proportionate steps to prevent and remove fake reviews. | Review sites have a duty to act on a well evidenced report. |
| Para 13(4) | Bans offering services to traders that do any of the above. | A firm that sells fake reviews or hides genuine ones is breaking the law itself. |
| CMA208 para 4.3 and 4.4 | Traders may break the law if they suppress genuine reviews, use threats of harm or legal action, or edit, withhold or remove negative reviews. | Report fakes. Leave genuine criticism alone and reply to it. |
| CMA208 para 8.19(c)(i) | Publishers should give consumers, traders and others an easy way to report suspected banned reviews. | The platform’s own report tool is the right first step. |
| CMA208 para 8.22(b) | Genuine reviews should not be removed merely because a trader objects to the reviewer’s assessment. | Your report must show the review is fake, not just unfair. |
Read the law itself on legislation.gov.uk and the full CMA208 guidance. The CMA says it can fine companies that break consumer law up to 10% of their global turnover.
Google: the fake engagement policy
Google’s prohibited and restricted content policy lists fake engagement under its fake and misleading content rules. It covers:
- Content that is not based on a real experience or does not accurately represent the place.
- Reviews or ratings that have been paid for, directly or in kind.
- Content posted from multiple accounts by or at the request of one person.
- Content posted with an emulator or other device tampering service.
- Merchants or users who ask for content that does not reflect a genuine experience, offer incentives for posting, revising or removing reviews, or post on a competitor’s place to undermine it.
Under rating manipulation the same policy bans selectively asking happy customers for reviews and says a conflict of interest may include current or former employment or a contractual relationship. Google’s restrictions page says that for fake engagement it may remove the reviews, stop a profile receiving new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing reviews for a set period and show customers a warning that fake reviews were removed. Google emails the owner before a restriction and allows an appeal.
What not to do when you find a fake review
Anger makes people do things that hurt their own case. Every item below is banned by a platform, by the law or by both. Fake review removal only works if your side stays clean.
| Do not | Why | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Post fake positive reviews to balance it out | Your whole profile can be restricted and it is unlawful in the US and the UK. | Google fake engagement policy, 16 CFR 465.2, DMCC para 13(1) |
| Post fake negative reviews about the rival you suspect | Same rules. It also turns your evidence against you. | Google fake engagement policy, 16 CFR 465.2 |
| Threaten the reviewer or send a legal letter with no real basis | Threats used to stop or remove a review are banned in the US. Trustpilot bans pressure, blackmail and threats. The CMA names threats of legal action. | 16 CFR 465.7(a), Trustpilot guidelines, CMA208 para 4.4 |
| Accuse the reviewer by name in a public reply | Knowingly or recklessly false public accusations made to get a review removed are banned in the US. | 16 CFR 465.7(a) |
| Offer the reviewer money or a discount to delete it | Google bans incentives for removing a negative review. The FTC says paying to remove truthful negative reviews may break the FTC Act. | Google fake engagement policy, FTC questions and answers |
| Report every negative review | Google says not to report a review just because you disagree with it. Trustpilot treats flagging too quickly or for the wrong reasons as misuse. | Google Business Profile Help, Trustpilot guidelines |
| Hide genuine negative reviews on your own website | Suppression is banned unless one rule applies to all reviews equally. | 16 CFR 465.7(b), DMCC para 13(2), CMA208 para 4.4(b) |
| Hire a firm that offers any of the above | Offering these services to traders is itself banned in the UK. The FTC says reputation management companies are not immune. | DMCC para 13(4), CMA208 para 7.1, FTC questions and answers |
| Pay someone who demands money to stop the reviews | Google says do not engage with or pay them. Paying does not mean the reviews come down and can invite more demands. | Google extortion guidance |

Fake review removal by industry
Every trade attracts its own kind of fake review. Knowing the usual pattern shortens the work.
- Law firms. The opposing party in a case posts as a client. Court records show the link. See review removal for law firms.
- Dentists and doctors. A former employee posts as a patient, or a billing dispute turns into a cluster. See review removal for dentists and doctors.
- Restaurants and hotels. Reviews about a different venue, or from people who never booked. See review removal for restaurants and hotels.
- Contractors. The quote that never became a job becomes a one star. See review removal for contractors.
- Online stores. Reviews that describe products you do not sell, often from drop shipping rivals.
- Agencies and consultants. Reviews from people who had a sales call and never became clients.
Fake review removal mistakes to avoid
- Reporting from anger rather than evidence. A report that says “this is fake” with nothing attached is ignored.
- Reporting every negative review. Platforms notice. Your genuine reports lose weight.
- Replying to the reviewer with accusations. It makes you look worse and changes nothing.
- Burning the appeal early. On Google you get one. Save it for the evidence.
- Posting fake positive reviews to balance things out. That is fake engagement under the same policy. In the United States it also breaks the FTC rule.
- Giving a stranger your Google login. Never. Reports can be filed with your help, not your password.
How long fake review removal takes
Google says reported reviews are usually evaluated within several days. Trustpilot investigates flagged reviews as soon as possible and may ask the reviewer for proof within three days. Yelp, Glassdoor and Indeed do not publish timelines. Appeals take longer than first reports. A case that needs an appeal takes longer, and no one can promise a date. We keep you updated at every step, so you never have to chase.
What fake review removal costs
With Removal Lab the eligibility check is free. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment. Each review is quoted in writing and you pay only when it is removed. If the platform refuses, you pay nothing for that review. Our pricing page explains the model in full and our guide on paying to remove Google reviews explains what to watch for with any provider.
For how other firms price this work and what to check in any quote, read our guide to review removal cost.
Try the instant check first
If you are not sure whether a review has a case, paste it into the instant review check on this page. Tick what applies. You get a rough chance in seconds and can send the result to a real specialist in one tap. It is not a decision, only the platform decides, but it is a good first filter before you spend any time on fake review removal.
Fake reviews versus honest bad reviews: a quick test
Before you start fake review removal, run the review through these five questions. If most answers are no, it is probably honest and the better move is a good reply.
| Question | Points to fake if | Points to honest if |
|---|---|---|
| Can you find the person? | No booking, order or message under that name | A real customer on a real date |
| Do the details match? | Mentions things you do not offer or places you are not | Describes your actual service accurately |
| When was it posted? | In a cluster with others, or right after a dispute with someone else | On its own, soon after a visit |
| Who is the reviewer? | New account, no photo, reviews only of rivals | Established account with mixed reviews |
| What is the tone? | Generic, copied or oddly detailed about staff rotas | Specific about one experience |
Questions we get about fake review removal
Can you prove a review is fake if the reviewer used a real name?
Yes, if the name is not in your records and the details do not match. A real name on a fake review is common.
Do we need a lawyer for fake review removal?
Rarely. The platform policy route is faster and cheaper. A lawyer comes in when the policy route fails and the harm is serious.
Can fake reviews be removed from Facebook?
Facebook recommendations can be reported for fake accounts, harassment or policy breaches. Its process is less clear than Google’s and outcomes vary.
What if the reviewer is a real customer who lied about what happened?
That is harder. Platforms do not referee disputes about facts. Where the review makes an accusation of wrongdoing with nothing to support it, the offensive content policy may apply. Otherwise a calm reply is the tool.
Will the reviewer know we reported them?
No. Platforms do not tell reviewers who reported a review.
How do we stop fake reviews coming back?
Keep the evidence folder, check the profile weekly and ask real customers for honest reviews after every good experience. A profile with steady genuine reviews is harder to damage.
Fake review removal is not magic. It is careful, boring, evidence work done by people who do it every day. If that is what you need, send the review and we will tell you within one business day where it stands.
Fake review removal prevention: asking real customers the right way
The best defence against fake reviews is a steady flow of genuine ones. The rules are simple and every platform agrees on them.
- Ask everyone, not only the happy ones. Selective asking breaks Trustpilot’s guidelines and looks suspicious on Google.
- Never offer a discount, gift or prize for a review. Incentives are banned on Google and Trustpilot and breach the FTC rule in the United States.
- Do not ask on Yelp at all. Yelp asks businesses not to solicit reviews.
- Ask soon after the experience, in person or by a short message, with a direct link.
- Reply to every review within a few days. It signals that the profile is watched.
A business with fifty genuine reviews and one fake one has a small problem. A business with six reviews and one fake one has a big problem. Volume of honest reviews is part of fake review removal strategy, even though it removes nothing.
What we need from you to start fake review removal
Five things. The review link or a screenshot with the date. Whether the person is in your records. Any link to a competitor or former staff. Whether you already reported it. Any other reviews from the same week. Send those by WhatsApp or email and a real specialist replies within one business day with an honest answer and, where there is a case, a written quote per review. No upfront payment on qualifying cases.
Why Removal Lab for fake review removal
Three reasons. We tell you no when the answer is no, which saves you money and keeps your profile in good standing. We work only through platform policy and evidence, which keeps you on the right side of Google, Trustpilot and the law. And you pay only when a review is actually gone, so our interest and yours are the same. Offices in Toronto and New York. Clients across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland. Everything handled by WhatsApp, email or phone, in confidence, by a real person. That is the whole pitch. The rest is in the pages linked below and in the free check that starts the moment you send the link.
One more practical note. Screenshots age well, links do not. A review that is removed, edited or reposted leaves no trace at the old link, but a dated screenshot keeps the record. Take the screenshot first, every time, before you do anything else.

How Removal Lab works
- Tell us what is out there. Send the link or a screenshot. It takes two minutes.
- We check it against the platform rules. A real specialist reads the content and tells you honestly whether it qualifies. No charge for this.
- We build the case and file it. Evidence, the right policy, the right channel.
- You pay only when it is gone. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. If the platform says no, you owe nothing.
What we will never do

- Post fake reviews or pay anyone to delete one.
- Threaten or pressure the person who posted.
- Take money upfront for a case that does not qualify.
In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since late 2024, bans fake reviews and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. Working by the rules is the only way that protects you.

Frequently asked questions
How do you prove a review is fake?
Through patterns and records. No matching customer, a reviewer linked to a competitor, wrong details about your business or text copied from elsewhere.
Can fake reviews be removed from every platform?
Every major platform bans reviews not based on a real experience. Whether a given review comes down depends on the evidence and the platform’s decision.
How long does fake review removal take?
Google says reported reviews are usually evaluated within several days. Other platforms vary.
What does fake review removal cost?
The eligibility check is free. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment.
Can fake reviews come back?
A removed review can be reposted by the same person. We explain what happens in that case before you start.
Is writing a fake review illegal?
In the US, 16 CFR 465.2 makes it unlawful for a business to write, create or sell fake reviews, or to buy reviews it knew or should have known were fake. In the UK, Schedule 20 paragraph 13 of the DMCC Act bans submitting or commissioning a fake review. The CMA says it can fine a company up to 10% of global turnover.
Can I sue the person who wrote a fake review under the FTC rule?
No. The FTC says its consumer review rule gives no private right of action. A lawyer can tell you whether another route, such as defamation, fits your case.
What does Google do to a business that posts fake reviews?
Google says it removes the fake reviews and may stop new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing ones and show customers a warning that fake reviews were removed. It emails the owner first and allows an appeal.
Can a fake review from a competitor be removed?
Yes, when the platform agrees it breaks the rules. Google bans posting on a competitor’s place to undermine it and Trustpilot bars reviews from anyone with a special relationship to the business, a competitor included.
Should I post good reviews to bury a fake one?
No. Google bans reviews that are not based on a real experience and can restrict your whole profile. Fake positive reviews also break 16 CFR 465.2 in the US and paragraph 13 of Schedule 20 in the UK.
Removal Lab does not work for any platform and cannot remove content directly. Every decision is made by the platform. Offices in Toronto and New York. Serving clients in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland.
