Defamation removal with Removal Lab

Someone wrote something about you that is simply not true. Now it sits online with your name attached, collecting readers. Defamation removal starts with a simple question. Does the post break the platform’s own rules? Most platforms ban unsubstantiated accusations, impersonation and harassment. That policy route is faster and cheaper than any courtroom. Where it is not enough, a legal route may apply. Removal Lab assesses your case in confidence and tells you which path has a real chance. No upfront payment on qualifying cases.

Defamation removal in one minute

Platform policy first. Google lists unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing under offensive content. Trustpilot lists defamation under harmful content. Reddit bans harassment. Legal action second, where the policy route fails and the statement causes real harm. We are not a law firm and we say so. We work the policy route and point you to the right legal help when needed.

Policy routes that cover false statements

PlatformRelevant policy
Google reviewsOffensive content covers unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing. Impersonation and harassment are separate policies.
TrustpilotHarmful or illegal content includes defamation. Reviews must be based on a genuine experience.
RedditSitewide rules ban harassment and impersonation. Communities add their own rules.
Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, XEach has policies on harassment, impersonation and false claims about people.

A report that names the exact policy and attaches evidence is what moves these platforms. We build that for you.

Where a false statement of fact causes serious harm and the platform will not act, legal options exist. These differ by country. In the United States the FTC rule on reviews also bans suppressing reviews through groundless legal threats, so threats are never part of our approach. We work the policy route and, where it makes sense, connect you with a lawyer in your jurisdiction.

Evidence that makes the difference

Defamation removal for people and businesses

We help professionals, business owners and private individuals in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the UAE. Send us the link and we reply within one business day with an honest view.

Is it defamation or just a harsh opinion?

This is the first question in any defamation removal case. Most painful posts are opinions. Opinions are allowed almost everywhere. A false statement of fact is different. It claims something happened that did not happen. That is where platforms and courts start to listen.

What the post saysWhat it usually isLikely route
“Worst service I have ever had. Avoid.”An opinionUsually stays. A calm reply does more than a report.
“The owner was arrested for fraud last year.” There was no arrest.A false statement of factGoogle lists unsupported criminal or unethical accusations under offensive content. Report it.
“They charged me five times the quote.” Your invoice shows the quote was paid as agreed.A claim you can disproveReport it with the invoice ready for the appeal.
A post with your home address or private phone numberA privacy problem, not only defamationPersonal information policies apply on most platforms.
A post written by someone pretending to be youImpersonationImpersonation policies apply. This is often faster than any defamation claim.

In England and Wales the Defamation Act 2013 also lists truth and honest opinion among its defences. That is why a strongly worded opinion is so hard to remove. Our honest list of what we cannot remove explains the rest.

Defamation removal routes compared

There are four routes. They are not equal. In defamation removal the cheapest route with a real chance should go first.

RouteWho decidesWhat it removesBest for
Platform policy reportThe platformThe review or post on that platformFake reviews, harassment, impersonation, private details
Ask the site ownerThe site ownerThe page itself, everywhereBlogs, forums and small sites with a contact page

Court actionA courtWhatever the order coversSerious harm where every other route failed. You need a lawyer.

This page is not legal advice

Removal Lab is not a law firm. Everything here is general information about how platforms and search engines handle false statements. If you are thinking about court action, speak to a qualified lawyer where you live.

How defamation removal works on Google

Google has its own process for defamation removal from Search. Its defamation help page describes defamation as a false statement that harms the reputation of a person or a business. It checks each request against local law, so the same page can get a different answer in different countries.

Google says the most effective step comes first: contact the site owner. A page removed at the source disappears from the web. A Google removal only affects Google Search.

Steps to send a Google defamation request

  1. Ask the site owner first. Keep a copy of your message and any reply.
  2. Collect the exact URLs. Google reviews only the links you list.
  3. Open the legal removal form. Start from Report content for legal reasons in Google Legal Help and choose defamation.
  4. Explain three things. How the content is about you, why the statement is false and how it harms your reputation.
  5. Name each country. If you want removal in more than one country, say which ones and why you have a reputation there.
  6. Add your evidence. Google says it is not well placed to judge truth, so it wants reliable proof. A court ruling in your favour counts as evidence.
  7. Use an email you check. Do not send the same URLs again while a request is open.

Google weighs the public interest too. It gives strong weight to government pages and weighs news content, especially recent stories. It also asks whether people searching your name have a real interest in the information, such as past clients reviewing a professional service. A request about a fake review is far stronger than a request about an old news report. For news, see news article removal. For other search results, see Google search result removal.

Defamation removal law in the UK and the US

Two countries come up most in defamation removal cases. Their rules work very differently. This is a short summary of the law itself, not advice on your case.

CountryWhat the law saysWhat it means in practice
England and WalesUnder section 1 of the Defamation Act 2013 a statement is not defamatory unless it caused or is likely to cause serious harm to reputation. For a business that trades for profit, that harm must cause or be likely to cause serious financial loss.A rude review rarely meets this bar. A false accusation that costs you contracts might.
England and WalesSection 5 gives website operators a defence for posts written by others. A notice of complaint must give your name, the statement, why it is defamatory and where it appears.A clear, complete notice matters. Vague complaints are easy to ignore.
United StatesSection 230 says a platform is generally not treated as the publisher or speaker of what someone else posted.Suing a platform rarely works. Its own rules are usually the faster route.
United StatesThe FTC rule on reviews, at 16 CFR 465.7, bans unfounded legal threats, intimidation and public false accusations used to stop or remove a review.Threatening a reviewer can put you in breach. We never do it.

Canada, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland each have their own rules. We do not summarise them here because the details change the answer. A local lawyer is the right person for that question. We handle the platform side of defamation removal in every market we serve.

A worked example of defamation removal

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

A family bakery wakes up to a new Google review. It says the owner was jailed for selling stale food. None of it is true. Here is how the owner handles the defamation removal step by step.

  1. Takes a dated screenshot and copies the review link.
  2. Checks the till records and booking system. There is no match for the reviewer.
  3. Posts one calm reply: no record of the visit, an invitation to get in touch.
  4. Reports the review from the Business Profile, under the reason that fits best.
  5. Gets the status “Report reviewed, no policy violation” and uses the one time appeal in the Reviews Management Tool, with the screenshots and the records attached.
  6. If it still stays up, speaks to a lawyer about a legal request. Not before.

Most owners never need step six. The policy route is where most defamation removal work is won. Our guide on how to dispute a Google review covers the appeal in detail and fake review removal covers reviews from people who were never customers.

How Removal Lab works

  1. Tell us what is out there. Send the link or a screenshot. It takes two minutes.
  2. We check it against the platform rules. A real specialist reads the content and tells you honestly whether it qualifies. No charge for this.
  3. We build the case and file it. Evidence, the right policy, the right channel.
  4. You pay only when it is gone. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. If the platform says no, you owe nothing.

What we will never do

In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since late 2024, bans fake reviews and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. Working by the rules is the only way that protects you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Removal Lab a law firm?

No. We work the platform policy route. Where a legal route is needed we tell you and point you to the right help.

Can a defamatory Google review be removed?

Google lists unsubstantiated accusations of wrongdoing under offensive content. A review that accuses you of a crime with nothing behind it may qualify.

Should I threaten the poster with legal action?

No. Public threats put readers off and in the United States groundless legal threats to suppress reviews breach the FTC rule.

How long does defamation removal take?

Policy reports are usually decided in days or weeks. Legal routes take longer.

What does it cost?

The assessment is free. On qualifying policy cases there is no upfront payment.

Does Google need a court order to remove a defamatory result?

Google’s defamation help page does not say a court order is required. It asks for the exact URLs, why the statement is false and how it harms you. A court ruling in your favour is treated as evidence.

Does a Google defamation removal work worldwide?

No. Google says an approved defamation removal applies only in the country where the content is considered defamatory. The page itself stays online unless the site removes it.

Removal Lab does not work for any platform and cannot remove content directly. Every decision is made by the platform. Offices in Toronto and New York. Serving clients in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, the UAE and Switzerland.
