Written by the Removal Lab team.

Did a Reddit thread with your name in it just show up on page one of Google? That is a stressful moment. You can sometimes remove a Reddit post like that, but only through Reddit’s own rules. A Reddit post is removed when it breaks a community rule or the sitewide Reddit Rules. Harassment, private information and impersonation are the most common grounds. Removal Lab helps people and businesses work out which route applies and builds the report.
The quick version: how to remove a Reddit post
1. Save the link, a screenshot and the username.
2. Check which rule the post breaks.
3. Report it with the Report button on the post or comment.
4. Message the community moderators if it breaks their rules.
5. Once it is gone, ask Google to refresh its copy.
Who can remove a Reddit post?
Three people can make a Reddit post disappear. Each one follows different rules.
| Who | What they enforce | How to reach them |
|---|---|---|
| The person who posted it | Their own choice to edit or delete. | Usually not advised if they are hostile. Never threaten them. |
| Community moderators | The rules of that subreddit. | Report the post or send a message to the moderators. |
| Reddit’s own team | The sitewide Reddit Rules. | Report the post using the reasons tied to the Reddit Rules. |
Which Reddit Rules lead to removal?
The Reddit Rules apply in every community. These are the ones that matter most when you want to remove a Reddit post about you or your business.
| Rule area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Harassment and bullying | Content that targets a person to harass, bully or threaten them. |
| Private information | Posting someone’s personal or confidential information without consent. |
| Impersonation | Pretending to be a person or business in a misleading way. |
| Illegal content | Posting or asking for content that is illegal. |
| Spam and manipulation | Coordinated posting, vote manipulation or spam. |
Each community can add its own rules on top. A local business forum might ban naming staff, for example. That gives you a second route to remove a Reddit post even when the sitewide rules do not apply.
How to remove a Reddit post step by step
- Capture the evidence first. Save the direct link, a full screenshot with the date and the username. Do this before you do anything else.
- Match it to a rule. Pick the Reddit Rule or community rule that fits best.
- Report it. Select Report on the post or comment and choose the matching reason.
- Contact the moderators. If the post breaks the community rules, send a calm, factual message with the link.
- Follow up once. If nothing changes, report again with clearer evidence.
Do not argue in the thread. Replies push the post higher and give it more attention.
What if the post is critical but not against the rules?
Honest criticism is allowed on Reddit. A post that says your service was slow will not be removed because it is unflattering. In that case the goal changes. You may not remove a Reddit post like this, but you can make sure better results show up when people search for you.
That means strong, helpful pages on your own site, accurate profiles and a calm public answer where it makes sense.
The post is gone. Why does Google still show it?
Google keeps a copy of pages it has crawled. After a post is removed, Google may still show the old title and snippet until it visits the page again. Google offers an outdated content tool where you can ask it to refresh a page that has been deleted or changed. That final step is often what makes a removal feel complete.
How to clear a removed Reddit post from Google
The thread is gone from Reddit, yet Google still shows its title and a snippet with your name. The fix is Google’s Refresh outdated content tool. Our Refresh outdated content tool guide covers every screen.
- Copy the address of the Reddit thread exactly as it shows in Google.
- Open the tool and select Request refresh.
- On the Page tab, enter the address of the page with the outdated content.
- Submit it. Check its status under Refresh outdated content.
| Status | What Search Console Help says it means |
|---|---|
| Pending | Google is processing it. Processing can take a few days. |
| Approved | The change should be live in results. |
| Denied | Google turned it down and links to the reason. |
| Expired | It was approved but is no longer active, 180 days after approval or once the URL no longer exists. |
| Cancelled | The requester or a verified site owner cancelled it. |
Two details save a wasted request. If Google asks for text, give one or two words that were in the search snippet but are no longer on the live page. A denial marked Content still on page means the content is still live, so report it on Reddit first.
How to report a Reddit post: the exact buttons
Reporting is the core of how to remove a Reddit post. Reddit’s help page on reporting keeps it short.
- Find the post or comment.
- Tap or click the overflow menu. On reddit.com and in the Reddit app it is a horizontal menu icon. On Android it is a vertical one.
- Select Report and choose the reason that matches.
- If you want no more contact from the account, block it as well.
Some problems have their own route. Use the one that fits.
| The problem | Where to report it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| It breaks a community rule | Report on the post, then message the moderators | Moderators enforce their own community rules |
| Harassment | Report on the post or comment | Reddit calls reporting the best way to let it know |
| Your personal information | Reddit’s report page at reddit.com/report | This is the page Reddit names for personal information |
| Someone pretending to be you or your business | Report next to the content | Reddit does not name a separate impersonation form |
| Something the report form does not cover | Reddit’s contact form | Include direct links and every username involved |
Reddit’s page on contacting the admins asks for a clear, short description, direct links to the posts or comments and the usernames of everyone involved. Give them exactly that.
What counts as harassment on Reddit
Harassment is the most common ground. It is also the most misunderstood. Reddit’s harassment rule is about targeting people. It is not about hurt feelings.
| What happened | Likely to break the rule? |
|---|---|
| Someone follows you from community to community to keep an old argument going | Yes. Reddit gives this as an example. |
| A sustained campaign of unwanted contact | Yes |
| A post telling others to pile negative comments onto you | Yes. Encouraging others to abuse someone is banned. |
| Dozens of messages sent only to flood your inbox | Yes |
| A strong opinion or criticism of what your business did | No. Reddit says criticism is allowed. |
| One rude insult in a heated debate | Usually no |
Impersonation and private information on Reddit
These two rules are often easier to prove than harassment because the facts are plain to see.
- Impersonation. Reddit’s impersonation rule bans pretending to be or represent a real person or organisation in a misleading way. Its examples include a business name used to offer deals and a near identical username. Using your company name to discuss your products or practices is allowed.
- Private information. Reddit says it is not okay to post someone’s personal information or links to it. That includes screenshots of social media pages with names still readable. Public figures can be an exception, for example the work contact details of a company chief executive.
Do not fight fire with fire
Posting the other person’s details, or asking friends to pile on, breaks the same rules you are reporting. It can also cost you the moral high ground with the moderators.
Reddit post removal by moderators or by Reddit itself
Who took the post down, or who should? Reddit post removal happens at two levels with different rules.
| Moderator removal | Admin removal | |
|---|---|---|
| Who acts | The moderators of that community | Reddit employees, known as admins |
| Rules applied | The community rules, which moderators create and enforce | The sitewide Content Policy |
| How to reach them | Report the post or write to the moderators through mod mail | Report the post with the reason that matches the Reddit Rules |
| If you disagree | Reddit says moderators are free to run their communities as they choose, within its rules | The poster is told the reason and can appeal within six months |
Reddit also uses automated tools. Its enforcement page says they flag possible violations for human review and remove content automatically when the system has high confidence that it breaks the Content Policy. If a moderator is the one breaking the rules, Reddit asks you to report the posts, comments, chats or messages involved.
Intimate images and deepfakes on Reddit
This is the most urgent case. Reddit’s Rule 3 bans sharing intimate or sexually explicit media of a person created or posted without their permission. Reddit says that includes depictions that may have been AI generated or faked, leaked or stolen images and posts that ask for deepfakes or lookalikes.
- Open the overflow menu to the right of the post or under the comment.
- Select Report.
- Choose Non Consensual Intimate Media, answer the follow up questions and submit.
- Block the account if you want no more contact.
Reddit’s support page says it uses StopNCII.org, a free tool for people over 18. If the same images show in Google, our Google image removal guide covers Google’s own form.
What Reddit can do once a report is upheld
Reddit’s enforcement page lists what it can do. Removing the content is only one option.
| Action | What it means |
|---|---|
| Remove the content | The post or comment is taken down |
| Warn the user | The account gets a warning |
| Temporary or permanent ban | The account is suspended or closed |
| Restrict new accounts | Harder for the same person to come back |
| Act against a community | Warnings, bans or quarantine for communities that keep breaking the rules |
The person who posted is told why and can appeal within six months. If Reddit decides its first call was wrong, it reverses it. So a clean, well evidenced report matters more than a fast one. That is the part of how to remove a Reddit post most people skip.
How to remove a Reddit post without making it worse
Avoid these five mistakes. Each one makes the thread bigger or your report weaker.
- Replying in anger. Every reply bumps the thread.
- Posting their details back. That is a private information breach of your own.
- Rallying friends. Directing others to pile on is harassment under Reddit’s rules.
- Deleting your own evidence. Keep the screenshots and links until the matter is closed.
- Reporting honest criticism. It wastes the moderators’ goodwill and it will not work.
What if the report does not work?
Reddit does not publish a time for decisions. Knowing how to remove a Reddit post also means knowing when to try again. If nothing changes, look at the route again. Was it the best rule? Was the evidence clear? A second report with a sharper explanation can do better than the first. If the post makes a false and serious claim, a legal route may exist. See defamation removal. Be aware that Reddit’s legal requests overview says it normally tells users about requests for their account information unless the law stops it.
The legal routes Reddit publishes
Some posts break the law rather than a community rule. For that kind of Reddit post removal, Reddit lists separate routes.
| Route | Who can use it | What Reddit says |
|---|---|---|
| Copyright form | The copyright owner or an authorised representative | Reddit removes content named in a valid notice and tells the poster. |
| Trademark form | The trademark owner or an authorised representative | Covers false claims of a link with the owner, confusingly similar goods and counterfeits. |
| EU Illegal Content Report Form | People reporting content they believe is illegal in the EU | Listed on Reddit’s request page, with appeal forms for decisions on those reports. |
A word for businesses. Criticism that names your brand is not a trademark case under Reddit’s overview. Use that route when an account poses as your brand or sells fakes.
When Reddit says no, Google may still help
If the thread shows your phone number, home address or email, Google’s Results about you tool lets you ask Google to remove that result. Sign in, select More next to the result, then Remove result, then It shows my personal info and I don’t want it there and Contact Info. Track it under Removal requests. Our guide to removing personal information from Google walks through it. For the other results for your name, see remove my name from Google.
A worked example
This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.
A café owner finds a thread in her city community. The post itself complains about slow service. One comment underneath shares her home address. A new account using the café’s name is offering fake discount codes.
- She saves links and screenshots of the post, the comment and the account.
- She reports the comment with her address through reddit.com/report as personal information.
- She reports the fake café account with the Report option for impersonation.
- She messages the community moderators, who also have a rule against sharing personal details.
- The comment and the fake account come down. The complaint about slow service stays. It is honest criticism.
- She asks Google to refresh its copy of the thread so the address no longer shows in the snippet.
That is how to remove a Reddit post or comment in real life. You remove what breaks the rules and you answer the rest. If the thread still ranks for your name, Google search result removal and personal reputation removal cover the next steps. We are also open about what we cannot remove.
When is it worth getting help?
Help makes sense when a post shares your home address or phone number, when it names your staff, when several accounts post the same claims or when the thread ranks for your name or business name on Google.
Removal Lab reviews the post, the community and the evidence at no charge. We tell you which route has a real chance and handle the reports. There is no upfront payment on qualifying cases. See our Reddit content removal service, or read how to remove personal information from Google.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Reddit post about me removed?
Sometimes. Reddit removes posts that break its rules, such as harassment, sharing someone’s private information or impersonation. A post that is critical but does not break a rule will usually stay.
Who decides whether a Reddit post is removed?
Two groups. Volunteer moderators enforce each community’s own rules. Reddit’s own team enforces the sitewide Reddit Rules, which apply everywhere.
Will a deleted Reddit post disappear from Google?
Not always straight away. Google may keep showing an old copy until it recrawls the page. Google’s outdated content removal tool lets you ask it to refresh a page that has been deleted or changed.
Is a negative Reddit review of my business against the rules?
Not by itself. Honest criticism is allowed. It may break the rules if it shares private details, targets a person with harassment or impersonates someone.
What evidence should I keep before reporting?
Save the direct link to the post or comment, a full screenshot with the date and the username. Direct links help reviewers find the content quickly.
Can the poster appeal if Reddit removes their post?
Yes. Reddit says the posting account is told the reason and can appeal within six months. If Reddit finds its first decision was wrong, it reverses it.
Where do I report personal information posted on Reddit?
Reddit asks people to report personal information violations through its report page at reddit.com/report. You can also use the Report option on the post or comment.
What is the difference between a moderator removal and an admin removal on Reddit?
Moderators enforce the rules of their own community. Admins are Reddit employees who enforce the sitewide Content Policy across the platform.
How do I get a deleted Reddit post out of Google?
Use Google’s Refresh outdated content tool. Select Request refresh, enter the thread address on the Page tab and submit.
Why did Google deny my refresh request for a Reddit post?
A denial marked Content still on page means the content is still live, so it has to come down on Reddit first.
Can I report intimate images of me posted on Reddit?
Yes. Use Report on the post or comment and choose Non Consensual Intimate Media. Reddit Rule 3 covers real images and depictions that may have been AI generated or faked.
Can I use trademark law to remove a Reddit post that criticises my business?
Usually not. Reddit’s trademark overview says using a trademark to review, discuss or criticise the owner’s goods or services is not infringement.
