Review removal for ecommerce with Removal Lab

Written by the Removal Lab team.

Forty new one star reviews overnight, none of them matching an order number. Is that just bad luck? Usually not. Review removal for ecommerce exists for exactly this: reporting reviews that break the platform’s rules. Removal Lab builds those cases on Trustpilot, Amazon, Google and Sitejabber.

Send the links for a free, confidential check. A specialist matches each review to the platform’s rules and replies within one business day. Qualifying cases have no upfront payment. The fee applies only when content is removed.

Why online stores have a unique review problem

A shop on a high street meets its customers. An online store meets order numbers. That gap makes it easy for people who never bought anything to post as if they did. It is also hard for a brand to prove a negative without a good system.

The upside is that online stores hold better records than almost any other business. Every genuine buyer left a trail: an order, an email, a delivery scan. Review removal for ecommerce turns that trail into evidence a platform can act on.

Which review platforms matter for online brands

Each site publishes its own rules. Review removal for ecommerce means matching each review to the right rulebook.

PlatformWhat it says in its own pagesHow a brand reports
TrustpilotZero tolerance for fake reviews. Businesses must not offer incentives to change or delete a review. Not liking a review is not a reason to flag it.Flag through the Service Reviews section of the business account. You can ask Trustpilot to try to verify a reviewer’s experience.
AmazonBans reviews by anyone with a financial interest, paid reviews and negative reviews from a seller on a competitor’s product. Amazon says it analyses every product review before it is posted.Use the Report abuse link next to the review on the product page.
Sitejabber (now SmartCustomer)Sitejabber’s address now redirects to SmartCustomer. Its policy bans insider reviews, all incentivised reviews and reviews not based on first hand experience.Use the flagging system in the business account dashboard.
Google Business ProfileBans fake engagement, posts on a competitor’s place made to harm it and content unrelated to an experience with that business.Report it from your Business Profile. The Reviews Management Tool shows its status.

How review removal for ecommerce works on Trustpilot

Trustpilot’s guidelines for businesses say a flagged review is checked only against the reason you choose. If the problem can be fixed, the reviewer gets a chance to change it. The review might be hidden while that happens. If the issue is not fixed, the review usually stays offline.

For online brands the most useful tool is the request to verify. If you do not recognise a reviewer, Trustpilot says you can ask it to try to verify their experience. That is where order records matter. Our pages on Trustpilot review removal and how to remove a Trustpilot review go step by step.

How it works on Amazon

On Amazon, review removal for ecommerce works differently because Amazon screens first. Amazon says only Amazon can remove or suppress a review. It does so only when the review fails Amazon’s standards. It says it analyses every product review before it goes live, using machine learning and human investigators. Reviews from buyers who bought on Amazon at a price available to most shoppers carry a Verified Purchase badge.

For a suspicious review, Amazon’s own page points shoppers to the Report abuse link next to the review. A seller who spots a rival leaving negative reviews on their products is describing something Amazon bans by name. Seller feedback is a separate system. Amazon’s seller site says negative feedback about Amazon’s fulfilment or customer service may be removed.

The FTC rule every online brand should know

In the US, review removal for ecommerce sits next to a federal rule. The FTC announced its final rule on consumer reviews and testimonials on 14 August 2024. It sits at 16 CFR Part 465 and covers fake or false reviews, buying positive or negative reviews, insider reviews, company controlled review websites, review suppression and fake indicators of social media influence. The FTC may seek civil penalties from knowing violators.

The review suppression section matters most for online stores. A brand must not suggest the reviews on its own site are all or most of the reviews received when it has hidden reviews because of their rating or negative sentiment. In other words, review removal for ecommerce happens on the platform, under the platform’s rules. It never means quietly deleting bad reviews from your own product pages.

A lesson from the FTC’s Sitejabber order

The FTC’s consent order with Sitejabber bars it from presenting ratings collected at the point of purchase as if they came from customers who had received and tried the product. If your review tool asks for a rating before delivery, check how those ratings are labelled.

Which ecommerce reviews can be removed

These are the patterns to look for in review removal for ecommerce.

No order, no customer

The name, email and story match nothing in your store. Trustpilot, Sitejabber and Google all require a genuine first hand experience.

A competitor in disguise

Amazon bans negative reviews from a seller on a competitor’s product. On Google, reviews posted on a rival’s listing to harm it count as fake engagement.

A review swarm after a viral post

A video about your brand spreads and dozens of reviews arrive from people who never ordered. Each one is judged on its own, but the timing helps show the pattern. If the source is a post, see TikTok content removal or Reddit content removal.

A review about the wrong product or seller

A buyer reviews your brand for a copy they bought from a different seller. Their order history shows the purchase was not from you.

A review that demands payment

Trustpilot says businesses must not offer anything to change or delete a review. When a reviewer demands a refund or gift to take a review down, save the message and report it. It is one of the clearer cases in review removal for ecommerce.

What platforms will not remove

Late deliveries, sizing that ran small, a product that did not live up to the photos: these are real experiences. SmartCustomer says reviews are never removed simply because they are negative. Trustpilot says the same about flagging. Review removal for ecommerce is for rule breaking reviews only. See what we cannot remove.

What evidence online brands usually hold

Strong review removal for ecommerce starts with a simple search across your own systems.

EvidenceWhere it livesWhat it shows
Order searchYour store platformNo order under that name or email
Delivery trackingYour courier accountThe parcel was delivered, or never shipped to that person
Support ticketsYour help deskThe person never contacted you
Refund and chargeback historyYour payment providerWhether a dispute was already resolved
Review timingThe platform itselfA burst of reviews within hours of a viral post
Messages asking for moneyEmail or chatA demand to pay for a review to be removed

We do not need customer data sent to us. You run the searches and tell us what you found. If a reviewer turns out to be a real buyer with a real complaint, fix the complaint instead.

A worked example: a skincare brand after a viral video

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

A small skincare brand appears in a critical video by a creator who sells a rival serum. Over two days, 37 one star Trustpilot reviews arrive. The brand searches its store for every name and email. Four match real orders. Thirty three do not.

  1. The brand saves dated screenshots and a list of the 33 unmatched reviews.
  2. For each one, it flags the review on Trustpilot as not based on a genuine experience.
  3. Where a reviewer cannot be matched, it asks Trustpilot to try to verify the reviewer’s experience.
  4. It replies to the four real buyers, offers to fix their problem and offers nothing in exchange for changing a review.
  5. It reports the video separately on the platform where it was posted.

Trustpilot makes each decision. The real buyers’ reviews stay, as they should. That is review removal for ecommerce done fairly.

How long it takes

Review removal for ecommerce runs on each platform’s own clock. Trustpilot does not publish a fixed timeline for flagged reviews. SmartCustomer says appeals are typically reviewed within 10 business days. Amazon screens reviews before they go live but does not publish a timeline for reports. Google’s estimate for a typical report is several days.

What to do if the platform says no

Add new facts and try the platform’s appeal route where one exists. If false claims spread to complaint sites, see complaint site removal. If you sell in the US, the FTC also takes reports of suspicious reviews at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For fake reviews more broadly, see fake review removal.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online store delete reviews on Trustpilot or Amazon?

No. Only the platform can remove a review. A store can flag or report reviews that break the rules and the platform decides.

Which ecommerce reviews can be removed?

Reviews from people who never ordered, reviews from competitors, reviews about another seller and reviews demanding payment often qualify. Honest complaints about delivery or quality stay.

Can I hide bad reviews on my own product pages?

The FTC rule bans suggesting your displayed reviews are all or most of the reviews received when you have hidden some because of a low rating or negative sentiment. Review removal for ecommerce should go through the platform’s own rules.

Is Sitejabber the same as SmartCustomer?

Sitejabber’s web address now redirects to SmartCustomer, which publishes its own review integrity policy. We check that policy on every case.

How long does review removal for ecommerce take?

It depends on the platform. Google says several days for a typical report and SmartCustomer says appeals are usually reviewed within 10 business days.

Do I pay if the reviews stay up?

No. Qualifying cases have no upfront fee. You pay only for content that is actually removed.
