A patient you have never treated just gave you one star on Healthgrades. The comment describes a procedure you do not even offer. Can you get it taken down? Healthgrades review removal works when a review breaks the Healthgrades community review guidelines and someone shows that clearly through the Flag Comment process. Removal Lab reads the review against those rules for free and tells you within one business day whether it qualifies. There is no upfront payment on qualifying cases. You pay only if Healthgrades takes it down.
This guide to Healthgrades review removal is for doctors, dentists and practice managers. It covers what Healthgrades says it removes, the exact flag steps, the evidence that helps and the honest list of reviews that will stay up.
How Healthgrades review removal works
Healthgrades says every review goes through a confirmation and auditing process before it appears. Its editorial policy explains that user content is checked for compliance with its business and privacy rules. Content that fails those rules is not posted.
Once a review is live, anyone can flag it. Healthgrades says live reviews can be flagged at any time for another look. Its customer service team then checks flagged comments against the community review guidelines. If the comment breaks a rule it comes down. If it does not, it stays.
Two other points shape every case. Healthgrades says doctors cannot pay for good reviews or pay to have negative ones removed. It also says fraudulent reviews are removed immediately once found. So Healthgrades review removal is never about money or pressure. It is about matching the words on the screen to a written rule and proving it.
Healthgrades keeps the final say. Its guidelines state that it has sole and absolute discretion in interpreting the policy and can reject or remove content for any reason. That cuts both ways. A strong flag can still fail. A weak one wastes your best chance at Healthgrades review removal.
Which reviews qualify for Healthgrades review removal?
The community review guidelines list what a review may not contain. Every successful Healthgrades review removal starts with one of them. Here is how each rule shows up in a medical or dental practice.
| Healthgrades rule | How it looks in a doctor or dentist review | Evidence that helps |
|---|---|---|
| Misleading, deceptive or fraudulent content | Describes a crown, a scan or a surgery your practice has never offered. Mentions a visit on a day the clinic was shut. | Your published service list. A schedule screenshot for that date with every patient detail removed. |
| Personal information | Gives a staff member’s full name, a phone number, an email address or a home address | A screenshot with the detail highlighted |
| Name calling or personal attacks | Insults aimed at you or your team rather than at the care received | The wording itself is usually enough |
| Libellous, harassing or threatening content | Threatens staff, or states as fact a serious wrong that never happened | Any record that shows the claim is false |
| Intolerance or obscenity | Remarks about race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability. Profanity or lewd language. | The wording itself |
| Legal matters or proceedings | Refers to a lawsuit, a complaint to a licensing board or another legal process | The wording itself |
| Brand mentions and endorsements | Pushes a named pharmaceutical or another product | The wording itself |
| Personal website links or mentions | Sends readers to a blog, a rival clinic or a social profile | The link |
| Impersonation | Written by someone posing as another person or organisation | Anything that shows who really wrote it |
The editorial policy adds a few more: off topic comments, marketing, contact details and naming other patients by full name. Healthgrades also says reviews containing phone numbers, email addresses or URLs will not be posted at all.
Who is allowed to review you on Healthgrades
This is where many practices go wrong. Healthgrades lets someone review a practice that they or a family member had contact with. A parent writing about a child’s appointment, or a husband writing about his wife’s visit, is inside the rules. Healthgrades review removal will not work on that review just because the writer was not the patient.
Other facts worth knowing before you flag anything:
- Every reviewer must answer the question about how likely they are to recommend you.
- A reviewer gets an automated email or text and must confirm the review. Healthgrades says unconfirmed surveys are not processed.
- Name, city and state are optional, so many reviews are anonymous. The email address is used for confirmation and is not made public.
- Only one review per provider is allowed from the same person. A new survey from the same email address replaces the old one.
- Some reviews are star ratings with no comment. A flag works on a comment, so a bare star rating has little to report.
How to report a review on Healthgrades yourself
Healthgrades explains the flag steps on its methodologies page. This is the first step in any Healthgrades review removal, whether you do it yourself or we do it for you:
- Open your profile on healthgrades.com and find the comment.
- Click the ellipsis (…) in the top right corner of the comment.
- Select Flag Comment.
- Complete the questionnaire. Point to one rule and say exactly which words break it.
- Click Submit Flag.
Customer service then checks the comment against the community review guidelines. The guidelines also give an address for feedback, reviews@healthgrades.com, which is useful if you need to send supporting material that does not fit the questionnaire.
It helps to claim your free provider profile first. Healthgrades says physicians get daily emails when a new review arrives, which means you see a problem the day it lands instead of weeks later.
Never confirm the patient in public
Healthgrades’ own guidance for providers warns against confirming any patient detail in a public reply, even when the patient shared it first. It also says not to ask patients to take down or change their reviews. Keep the evidence for the flag and keep the reply general.
What evidence helps Healthgrades review removal
Healthgrades advises providers to report reviews that are clearly not from a concerned patient, are unrelated to the organisation or break the site terms. It also asks for evidence. In a medical setting that evidence has to protect privacy. Useful items include:
- A schedule view for the date in question with every patient name and detail removed
- Your published list of services, to show the treatment described is not one you provide
- Opening hours or a closure notice for the day mentioned
- Screenshots of a cluster of similar reviews posted close together, if you suspect a coordinated attack
- The exact quote that breaks the rule, copied into the flag so the moderator does not have to hunt
Never send medical records. Healthgrades review removal never needs them. If a document contains patient information, strip it out before it leaves the practice.
What Healthgrades will not remove
Healthgrades asks reviewers to write about scheduling, parking, payment options, office staff and how the provider communicated. Those topics are fair game, even when the review is harsh. Knowing this saves you a wasted Healthgrades review removal request.
| Review says | Will it come down? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “I waited an hour and the receptionist was rude” | Unlikely | Opinion about the visit, which Healthgrades invites |
| “The doctor got my diagnosis wrong” | Unlikely | Healthgrades says it does not review user content for medical accuracy |
| A relative describing a visit they attended | Unlikely | Reviews about a family member’s contact are allowed |
| Anonymous one star rating with no comment | Unlikely | Name is optional and there is no comment to judge |
| A comment naming your hygienist in full | Possible | Full names are personal information under the guidelines |
| A review mentioning a malpractice claim | Possible | Legal matters or proceedings are not allowed |
If your review sits in the top half of that table, the better route is a calm reply and more genuine reviews. Our page on what we cannot remove explains why we turn those cases down.
How long Healthgrades review removal takes
Healthgrades does not publish a timeline for decisions on flagged comments. What it does say about timing is limited:
- Once a reviewer confirms, the star rating counts on your profile immediately.
- Written comments may take a little longer to appear because they are audited first.
- If a review has not appeared within five days, Healthgrades says it may not have been published because it broke the guidelines.
We tell clients the same thing. Any promise of a fixed date for Healthgrades review removal is a guess dressed up as a fact.
Responding to a Healthgrades review
The provider help centre has an article on how to respond to a review, reached through your provider sign in. Before you write anything, read Healthgrades’ own advice to practices. It suggests taking a day to understand the patient’s experience, thanking them, addressing the concern in general terms and giving a phone number or email to continue the conversation offline. It also suggests having legal counsel read replies.
A reply sits alongside Healthgrades review removal, not instead of it. A good reply never confirms that the person was a patient, never discusses treatment and never argues. Future patients read the reply more than the review. For a deeper look at replies in healthcare, see review removal for dentists and doctors.
What to do if Healthgrades says no
A refused Healthgrades review removal request is not always the end. Check whether anything has changed. A second review from the same person, a new detail that names staff or a pattern across several profiles can justify a fresh flag.
Remember that only the reviewer can edit or delete a review. Healthgrades says account holders can do this under My Reviews. People without an account can email Healthgrades with their email address and the doctor’s name. You may not pressure them to do it. You can make it easy for a patient to raise a problem with you directly. Some patients update a review of their own accord after a fair resolution.
Then work on volume. Healthgrades says its Patient Favorite badge needs a rating of 4.0 or higher, at least 6 total reviews and at least 5 written reviews in the past 5 years. A steady flow of real reviews makes one unfair comment far less visible.
If the review is false and damaging and Healthgrades will not act, a legal route may exist. Our defamation removal page explains when that is worth exploring.
Healthgrades and the other doctor review sites
Patients rarely look at one site. The same unhappy person may post on several. Each platform has its own rules. A review that breaks Healthgrades’ rules may be fine elsewhere. The reverse is also true, so Healthgrades review removal does not settle the others.
- RateMDs review removal uses a flag button and a paid appeal route.
- Zocdoc review removal runs through a Trust and Safety email. Providers cannot reply there at all.
- Google reviews follow their own policy. Our guide to Google review policy violations covers that side.
- If a review looks invented, our fake review removal page explains how we show it.
How Removal Lab works
- Send the link. WhatsApp, email or the two field form. Two minutes, no long questionnaire.
- Free policy check. A specialist reads it against the platform rules and tells you honestly whether it qualifies.
- We build and file the case. The right policy, the right channel, the evidence attached. We handle the appeal too.
- Pay only when it is gone. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. If the platform says no, you owe nothing.
What we will never do
- Promise a removal. The platform decides, not us.
- Post fake reviews or pay anyone to delete a review.
- Pressure, threaten or try to identify a reviewer.
- Charge an upfront fee on a case that does not qualify.

Frequently asked questions
Can a doctor delete a Healthgrades review?
No. Only Healthgrades can remove a review from your profile. You can flag a comment with Flag Comment and Healthgrades checks it against its community review guidelines.
Can I pay Healthgrades to remove a negative review?
No. Healthgrades says doctors cannot pay for positive reviews or pay to have negative reviews removed.
Can a family member review my practice on Healthgrades?
Yes. Healthgrades lets people review a practice that they or a family member had contact with, so a relative’s review is not a breach on its own.
Does Healthgrades check reviews for medical accuracy?
No. Its editorial policy says user content is checked against business and privacy rules, not for medical accuracy.
How long does Healthgrades review removal take?
Healthgrades does not publish a timeline for flagged comments. It says fraudulent reviews are removed immediately once found and that unpublished reviews older than five days may have broken the guidelines.
What does Healthgrades review removal cost with Removal Lab?
The check is free. On qualifying cases there is no upfront payment and you pay only when Healthgrades removes the review.
