News article removal with Removal Lab

An old story from years ago still sits on page one, as if nothing happened since. That is the problem with the internet. It has a long memory and no sense of proportion. News article removal is one of the most requested services in reputation work and one of the least understood. Publishers rarely delete stories. What they sometimes do is update them, add an outcome, remove a name or ask search engines to stop indexing them. Removal Lab assesses your article honestly and tells you which of these is realistic. No upfront payment on qualifying cases.

News article removal in one minute

Four outcomes are possible. The publisher unpublishes. The publisher updates or anonymises the story. Google removes the result on a policy or legal basis. Or nothing changes and the right move is to build stronger content above it. We tell you which applies before anyone pays.

When publishers say yes

A short, factual request with documents attached does far better than an emotional one. We write it that way.

When Google can help

Google generally keeps news results because it sees them as valuable to the public. It still removes results that expose personal contact details or ID numbers and it acts on valid legal requests. Where a publisher has already updated or deleted a story, Google’s outdated content tool clears the old copy from search.

Why nobody should promise news article removal

Editorial decisions belong to the publisher. A company that promises removal for a fee is either charging you for a request you could send yourself or planning something that puts you at risk. We tell you the odds honestly, then act on the route that has a real chance.

How news article removal works, step by step

Good news article removal work starts small. Editors say no to “delete it” far more often than they say no to “fix this one line”. So ask for the smallest change that removes the harm.

  1. Read it like an editor. Mark what is wrong, what is out of date and what is private. Be specific.
  2. Contact the newsroom first. Canada’s press council says your first step should be the editor or newsroom. IPSO in the UK normally passes complaints to the publication first too.
  3. Ask for the smallest fix. An update with the outcome, a correction, a removed name or a removed address.
  4. Attach proof. A court outcome, a corrected record or a document that shows the error.
  5. Use the press regulator if there is one. Complain under its code and within its time limit.
  6. Clean up Google afterwards. Once the page changes, ask Google to refresh its copy.

A short request wins

Two paragraphs. What is wrong, the proof and the exact change you are asking for. Leave out how upset you are. Editors read hundreds of these. This works for any news article removal request.

Press regulators that handle news complaints

Press regulators focus on fixing stories, not deleting them. IPSO lists outcomes such as corrections, apologies and adjudications. For news article removal, a fix is often enough to solve the search problem.

Before you complain in Canada

The National NewsMedia Council says it may publish its complaint decisions with the names of the people who filed them. Think about that before you file a complaint about a story you want fewer people to read.

Which Editors’ Code clause fits your story

In the UK, IPSO complaints are judged against the Editors’ Code of Practice. Pick the clause that matches the real problem. The right clause makes a news article removal request far stronger.

ClauseWhat it coversTypical news article removal request
1. AccuracySignificant errors must be corrected promptly with due prominence. People get a fair chance to reply.Add the outcome or correct the facts
2. PrivacyRespect for private and family life, home, health and correspondence. Intrusion needs a justification.Remove a home address or health details
6. ChildrenExtra care for under 16s and their welfare.Remove a child’s name or photo
9. Reporting of crimeRelatives and friends of people accused or convicted should not usually be named without consent unless they are genuinely relevant.Remove the name of a family member

What Google can do once the article changes

Google rarely removes news on its own. Its Results about you tool says results from some sites, such as online newspaper sites, do not offer the Remove result option. But Google does act once the publisher changes the page.

The refresh tool is not for a live page that still says the same thing. That is why the publisher comes first in every news article removal case.

A worked example of news article removal

This is a made up example to show the steps. It is not a client case.

A local paper reports that a teacher was charged with assault. Months later the case ends in an acquittal. The story never mentions it. It also names the street she lives on.

  1. She saves the article link and the court record of the outcome.
  2. She emails the newsroom: the outcome, the record attached and two requests. Add the result. Remove the street name.
  3. The paper adds an update and removes the street name.
  4. She uses the Refresh Outdated Content tool with the street name as the word that no longer appears.
  5. Searches for her name now show the updated story. Most readers stop at the headline update.

The story is still online. But it now tells the truth. That is a realistic win in news article removal. If accurate pages about you are thin, personal reputation removal and our guide to removing your name from Google cover the next steps. We are also honest about what we cannot remove.

How Removal Lab works

  1. Tell us what is out there. Send the link or a screenshot. It takes two minutes.
  2. We check it against the platform rules. A real specialist reads the content and tells you honestly whether it qualifies. No charge for this.
  3. We build the case and file it. Evidence, the right policy, the right channel.
  4. You pay only when it is gone. No upfront payment on qualifying cases. If the platform says no, you owe nothing.

What we will never do

In the United States the FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since late 2024, bans fake reviews and bans suppressing reviews through threats or intimidation. Working by the rules is the only way that protects you.
